Chapter 24 - Answers

Smelling another wolf's scent at my door had set me on edge. My mission of informing my mate on what I had discovered in my investigation into her home pack was forgotten, as I entered ready to bust some heads at whoever would be stupid enough to enter my home where my mate was. Storming into the living room all thoughts I had on attacking vanished at the vision casually sitting by the fire. Her long legs draped over the arm of the chair stretching slightly, flexing her toned and supple light tan skin.

"Hey, did you get your work caught up on?" April asked from just over her book, giving me that look that drove my mind insane.

Words seemed to escape me as I felt how close and tight my clothing felt, how breathing seemed to have become difficult and how her scent seemed to envelope me entirely.

"My eyes are up here, Mr. Alpha" her voice broke me out of unrestrained gawking of her legs and I felt that familiar heat pooling in my face.

"I had a nice time today, if you were wondering" she said with her head tilted and large doe-eyes, reminding me I was just staring at her in silence like an idiot.

"The scent, who was here?" I questioned, remembering why I burst into the room in the first place.

She looked at me with slightly furrowed brows, clearly not knowing what I was talking about. That wasn't good, someone had gotten to our door without anyone fucking noticing?!

"If it was just by the door, it was a pack member that helped me carry some bags up, is all."

Ah, that would make more sense.

"You do realise if anything had happened I would have mind-linked you straight away?" she said softly, with her large eyes hypnotising me once more.

I stepped towards her as she stretched her leg out towards me, poking me in my stomach with her delicate foot.

"So, are you going to tell me about your day or am I just gonna have to guess? Or did you want to storm round the rest of the suite for possible intruders first?" 

Goddess, her teasing and those eyes were driving me and my wolf insane.

"I know what you're doing, giving me those big eyes with that little head tilt."

I grasped her ankle, lifting it to my lips and planting soft, butterfly kisses along her skin. Her breath hitched as I ascended up her calf, leaving a tingling trail in my wake.

"I...I don't know...what you're talking about" she struggled to speak out, the confidence in her voice wavering as I kissed my way up her inner thigh.

"You really don't know what you do to me?" I challenged, meeting her eye "then I'll have to show you." 

Her eyes widened as I lifted her by her waist, wrapping her legs around me and capturing her startled gasp in a deep kiss, the book in her hands long forgotten. I carried her through to our bedroom, never once breaking contact with our lips. She tasted like sunshine and the hot meadow scent of her skin drove every ounce of control out of my mind. 

I lifted her sweater, throwing it somewhere into the room. I looked down to be both excited and annoyed by what was covering her chest, a thin, pink, lace bra that both accentuated her breasts and hid them from my sight. Her fingers worked to undo the buttons of my shirt, trying hastily to rid me of my clothing. Our lips met once more as did the bare skin of our torsos now exposed with little in our way except her bra, which I would rid her of soon. 

Placing her on the edge of the bed, I hooked her shorts and slowly pulled them down, making sure my hands grazed all along her luscious legs. She wore matching pink lace panties that displayed just enough to have me wanting more, she definitely planned this little surprise and I was eager to show my appreciation.

I undid my belt slowly, unzipping my jeans and letting them fall to the floor, watching as her eyes widened in anticipation. I left my boxers in place, needing a barrier to prevent me losing my control entirely. 

"These look new, you wore them just for me?" I said, looking over every inch of her.

"Maybe" she whispered back, trying to sound more confident than she felt.

"They do look good on you...but they're hiding what I want."

I hooked my thumbs into the silken band of the lace and slowly pulled them down over her thighs and ankles, bringing the fabric to my nose to inhale her maddening scent of arousal.

"I don't think I've ever smelt something I want more than you" I gazed down at her with black eyes, encouraged further by her own pitch black eyes staring up at me.

I dropped to my knees, between her thighs where she rested on the bed. Reaching up, I peppered kisses across her neck and shoulder, loving the moans that came for her lips. I decided to leave it on her for now, liking the feeling under my fingertips and pushing on her stomach, urging her to lie down. I slid my arms under her thighs, lifting them over my shoulders, stroking the soft skin that led me to my goal and opening her fully to my sights. Lifting her hips to my mouth I planted lingering kisses along her slit, lightly brushing her clit, sending a shiver running through both of us. I sensed as she was getting close to her high as her fingers clung in my hair, pushing me deeper, her thighs around my face beginning to quake. Her hoarse voice, ragged, cried out in pleasure to the moon goddess and called out my name, while I lapped her up wanting every drop of her heated sunshine taste. Her breathing was uneven and shallow, with a dazed look on her face trying to come back to some form of reality.

April laid against my chest, heaving with a thin sheen coating her wonderful skin, making it glow like honey. My fingers played with the skin of her thigh draped over my waist, while I kissed her forehead. Time seemed to have blended together, the dwindling light of sunset had given way to complete darkness so a few hours must have passed since I carried my mate into our bedroom. Dinner would have long since been served, but my mate needed to eat and I wouldn't allow her to skip any meals, doctor's orders. 

'I'm gonna go see what's down in the kitchen for you. Everything in my fridge needs cooking and you need to eat now. I won't be long.'

She nodded, seemingly with little energy to even answer. 

My poor sweet, maybe I overdid it with her.

I pulled my jeans back on and buttoned up my thick shirt, casting one more glance back at my mate's naked flesh. Her bra had been cast aside to join her other clothes flung into the room long ago. My eyes settled on the pale, faded bruise on her left side, she was healing nicely now with proper care. I grabbed the fur throw placing it over her form so she wouldn't be cold in my absence. With a final kiss, I left heading straight for the pack kitchen. As I entered I heard gentle laughter and talking from several people inside. A few pack cooks were finishing up from dinner service, putting things away. I noticed Janine, the young warrior I had sent out with April helping her mother, Reena, put plates away. 

"Hi Alpha, can we get you anything?" Reena asked with a smile.

"Just come to hunt for some leftovers, my mate unfortunately missed dinner tonight."

"Oh sure, can't have our Luna going hungry. I'll heat some things up for you."

I gave her a thanking smile as she turned to put some things together.

"You have fun today, with April out shopping?" I asked Janine as her mother busied herself.

"Tons! She so sweet and kind, I love her already. I might take her out again soon...if that's ok?" she asked hesitantly, thinking she may have overstepped.

I had gained a bit of a reputation in my pack as being a little distant, intimidating and hard in this last year, though it wasn't a true reflection on my character it was better than the philandering drunk image I used to have. But I didn't want to be seen as unapproachable anymore, I wanted my pack to be able to speak their mind to me without fear of reprisal. Though I would never let up on the pack's training, true strength came from skill, not brute force.

"It's not my permission you need, it's her's. I'm fine with anything she wants as long as her safety is taken care of" April had free reign of anything as long as no harm came to her.

Janine beamed and nodded as Reena handed me some covered food. I left taking the steps two at a time, both my wolf and I wanting to get back to our mate. 

She was sat up in bed wearing one of my long sleeved t-shirts, those long legs peeking out from under the throw looking dangerously tempting...she was doing it again and her little smirk told me she knew it.

"You better start on this, before I decide to eat something else again" I warned, flashing my black eyes.

"I can multitask" she challenged, making my breathing seem difficult again.

Goddess, this woman would kill me.

She laughed at my reaction, placing the tray on the bed and handing me a fork.

"Mmmm, smells fantastic. Pulled pork, rice, fried okra and greens? We're just missing some sweet tea."

Damnit, I forgot to get her something to drink!

"Shit, I didn't think. If you want sweet tea I can get you some?" I rushed out.

"No, silly, I'm fine. Just eat with me" she smiled, making my heart soar once again.

As we ate, she spoke up "so was your day super secret? Because I've had to ask 3 times now."

I chuckled a little "sorry, I got a little sidetracked."

'Just a little' she mind-linked as she chewed through a huge bite.

I sighed, wondering whether now was the right time to tell her what I'd found out today. But I didn't want to leave her in the dark on anything.

"I got caught up on some things. There was something else I wanted to look into though. I think I found the reason why Nicholas wanted you and your pack so much…"

She paused midway with her fork "...and?"

"Your pack was in north Montana, right?" she nodded, slowly taking her bite "do you remember your dad being involved in oil drilling on his land at all?"

She looked at me confused "I mean, I was pretty young but I don't remember anything being talked about like that. My dad really respected our land, I can't see him wanting to drill for anything like oil. I don't even think we had anything like that."

"You do. I looked up several oil fields on what would have been your territory, all of them popped up in the last 15 years. I knew there had to be something more that this Alpha wanted besides just you. I think this is what he wanted, this oil has probably made him millions of dollars. And because you're the rightful Alpha by blood to that land, having you would only solidify his hold on your pack members. Any pups you produced with his son..." those words almost made my blood boil, making me take a deep breath before I continued "...would be bound to both packs by blood, his family's hold on your territory would be undisputed."

I finished, taking her hand and rubbing soothing circles on the back of it. She had harboured so much displaced guilt for so long in thinking she was the sole reason for her pack's destruction.

No matter how long it took, I would make sure Monkshood Moon's Alpha, and his son, would pay for their greed.
