Change of Scenery

Amber

 

	“Welcome to Starhaven, Amber,” Carlton says with a beaming smile as we exit the limo.

	I look up at the tall ornate skyscraper. It’s like a golden beacon in the sun. I had heard the Night Star had several lucrative businesses; I just didn’t realize how lucrative. 

“Do you like it?” Carlton nudges me.

	I glance at him. Ever since I have met him, I have felt uncomfortable in his presence. It felt like everything he said was a lie or an act. I can’t help but feel he has an ulterior motive for bringing us here. 

“It’s nice.”

	Carlton scoffs loudly and looks at Skylar, “Nice, he mutters to my mate.

	Skylar and Tyler look anywhere but at me. 

	“Let’s go in, shall we,” Carlton gestures, and we walk into the front door. 

	The lobby is every bit as impressive as the outside of the building. Workers all stand to bow as we walk towards an ornate elevator. Carlton whistles as we step into it. There is plush carpeting on the floor and a golden inlaid chair. 

	I gasp as the elevator moves faster than I was expecting. I stumble backward, but Tyler catches me. He smiles at me and melts my heart. I smile back and lean against him. Skylar steals a glance our way before staring at the door. The doors slide open, and we step out into another opulent room. The ceiling seems to soar to the sky above us as windows overlook the large city below. The wrap-around white couches are occupied, but several people all stand.

 Carlton walks toward them with his arms out, “Amber, I’d like you to meet more of the Brooks clan.” 

Tyler and Skylar greet a young man who looks like Carlton and a bit like the twins.

 “This is Dwight,” Carlton introduces him. “My son. My only son.”

 Dwight holds a hand out to me with a brilliant smile on his handsome face, “It’s nice to meet you, Amber. I can’t believe my dumb cousins got such a pretty mate.”

 A pregnant woman standing beside him punches his arms. She is flanked by two young kids looking at me with curiosity. I smile at them as the woman grins at me, “I am Miranda, this dumbo’s mate,” She pats her belly. “And those are our pups, Milo and Elsie.” She touches her belly, “And this one is Troy.”

 “Cool,” I smile at the two kids, “I’m Amber.”

 They giggle, and the little girl steps toward me,” You are very pretty.”

 “Thank you, Elsie,” I tell her. I notice her adorable little floral dress, “I like your dress.”

 “I like flowers,” Elsie giggles and steps back to wrap her arms around her mother’s leg.

 Carlton gestures to me as the twins start talking to Dwight again. He points to two teenage girls, “These are my daughters, Felicia and Kylie.”

 I smile at them and wave.

 “Oh, my gods, you are gorgeous,” The one I believe to be Felicia squeals. “We have to go shopping later.”

 “Felicia,” Carlton looks at her. “Let her settle in first.”

 “Fine, Daddy,” Felicia pouts.

 There is one more woman at the end of the line that Carlton puts his arm around. She is a gorgeous blond with brown eyes wearing a tight green dress. Carlton kisses her cheeks. I catch her scent and know that she is not a wolf.

 “This is Cassia, my fiancée,” Carlton mentions her.

 “You didn’t tell us you were getting married,” Tyler blurts out.

 “I told your dad,” Carlton shrugs.

 I turn my attention to Cassia. There is a bit of fear in her eyes. “Are you afraid of us?”

 She shakes her head, “No, I am used to being the only human in the room. But I sense something more coming from you.”

 I let out a nervous laugh. “Me? I’m nothing special.”

 “Bullshit, girl,” Carlton laughs loudly. “Amber here is off royal blood. Even a human like Cassia can sense that kind of power.”

 “I’m not entirely human,” Cassia corrects Carlton. 

“My moth- “

 “That’s nice dear,” Carlton cuts her off. “Is lunch ready?”

 Tears appear in Cassia’s eyes, “I’ll go check,” She smooths her dress and walks out of the room.

 “Sit,” Carlton directs us. “Looks like Cassia made sure we had drinks and snacks,” He mentions while ambling toward a bar on one side of the room. I sit on the couch with Tyler beside me. Skylar sits across from us next to Dwight. Miranda sits with her hand on her large belly, and I shudder.

 I am not looking forward to looking like that. 

And the fact that I may be carrying more than one pup means I’ll be even bigger. I sigh and look at the ground.

 ‘It won’t be that bad,’ Lilith speaks up. She has been surley ever since I freaked out about being pregnant. 

 I ignored her as Carlton hands Tyler a glass of brown liquor. I lick my lips as I get a whiff of the bourbon.

 “I would have gotten a glass for you, Amber,” Carlton grins, “But no bourbon for preggos.”

 I narrow my eyes at him. “I’ll get us a drink, Amber,” Miranda says and struggles to get to her feet. She grunts and groans as Dwight ignores her to talk to Skylar. 

 I stand up, “I’ll get them,” I look at the bar.

 “The girl drinks are over there,” Carlton points to a kitchenette beside the bar.

 I walk over and open the fridge to find soda and juices. 

I reach for a Sprite and turn toward Miranda, “What would you like?” I ask her.

 “Grape soda,” Elsie blurts out. She and her brother are sitting with tablets on their laps.

 “Don’t be rude, Elsie,” Miranda admonishes her.

 Elsie frowns, so I grab her a grape soda. “Milo?” I ask the boy, but he doesn’t look up from his tablet. 

 “Milo, do you want something to drink?” Elsie nudges him, and he whines. “He likes orange soda,” Elsie tells me.

 I grab an orange soda.

 “Get me a ginger ale,” Miranda says. “My stomach is acting up.”

 I comply and walk over with an arm full of drinks. I hand Miranda and the pups their sodas before sitting down beside Tyler. I crack open the Sprite and chug down half of it.

 “Go easy on the sugar,” Skylar speaks up.

 I glare at him and say nothing.

 “I heard sugar is bad while you are pregnant,” Skylar explains.

 I chug the rest of the soda and belch loudly. “Excuse me,” I say while the pups giggle.

 “Well, now,” Carlton snorts. “So, I brought you three here to relax and kick back. You don’t have to worry about anything. You are perfectly safe here,” He explains.

 I nod and watch as Cassia steps back into the room. She attempts to sit beside Carlton.

 “Why don’t you see if our guests want snacks?” He grumbles at her.

 Cassia sighs, “Lunch is almost ready, according to Della.”

 “Good now, the snacks,” Carlton grunts.

 Cassia purses her lips and picks up a tray of meats and cheeses. She passes by Tyler and me, and I grab a few nibbles of cheese. Her eyes read sadness and something else. I wonder what Carlton does to her behind closed doors.

 ‘I don’t like how your uncle treats his fiancée,’ I mind linking Skylar and Tyler.

 ‘How is he treating her?’ Skylar asks, and I look at him.

 ‘You don’t see it?’ I huff.

 “Milo stop it,” Elsie screams out.

 I see her brother wiping his fingers on her tablet and giggling. 

 She tries to retaliate, but Milo screams.

 “Elsie leaves your brother alone,” Miranda chastises her.

 I pat the couch beside me, “You can sit over here, Elsie.”

 The little girl hops off the couch and runs over to sit beside me. 

 “What are you playing?” I look at the tablet and notice it looks like a game that my niece Alexa likes to play. 

 “Princess makeover,” She responds.

 “My niece loves that game,” I say to her.

 “Want to play with me?” Elsie grins up at me. 

 I shrug, “sure." I look at the tablet. Elsie gives me a brief explanation of her game.

 We sit and play for a few minutes until an older woman in a grey maid’s uniform steps into the room, “Lunch is ready, Master,” she tells Carlton.

 “Thank you, Martha,” He grins at her.

 “I’m Magda,” She corrects him.

 “Whatever,” Carlton stands up, “You heard her. Lunch is ready.”

 We all stand up, and Elsie grabs my hand with a giggle.

 Tyler leans over, “You know, for a woman who doesn’t want to be a mother, you sure are good with pups,” He whispers.

 I lightly elbow him as he laughs. Skylar is ahead of us, talking to Carlton, and glances back. Our eyes meet, and I melt. He smiles and then turns to his uncle.

 We are led into an opulent dining room. It, too, has windows nearly wrapped around the whole room. Beyond the city, I see the ocean sparkling in the sunlight. I am mesmerized for a moment.

 “Do you like the ocean?” Carlton’s voice makes me jump. 

He is right beside me.

 I nod, “Yeah, it’s something my mother loved,” I mutter.

 “Perhaps the boys will take you there tomorrow. We have a lovely private beach with a nice little bungalow for you to relax in,” Carlton says and lightly leads me to the large round table filled with an overabundance of food. “Are you hungry?” He laughs. “Carrying my nephew pups, you must be.”

 “I don’t know about pups,” I say as he sits me down.

 “Oh, you have twin mates, dear. You will have more than one,” He laughs, “Right boys?”

 Tyler and Skylar sit on either side of me, “That’s what we have been told,” Tyler answers me.

 “We have whatever you fancy,” Carlton says.

 I reach for a roast beef sandwich and some salad. I pick up a large pickle and crunch into it.

 “Ouch,” Tyler giggles.

 I lift an eyebrow at him and smirk, “Careful, or I’ll do this to you later,” I take another bite, and Tyler laughs.

 “You two are sick,” Skylar mumbles.

 I elbow him, “You know you like it when I use my teeth.”

 Skylar smirks and licks his teeth, “Yes.” He hisses in my ear.

 We all eat our lunches in comfortable silence for a few moments. The quiet is interrupted by Elsie and Milo arguing over a cupcake.

 “I saw it first, Elsie Nor,” Milo yells.

 “Elsie, what are you doing to your brother?” Dwight yells. “Give him the cupcake.”

 “But Daddy- “ 

 “I said give it to your brother,” Dwight growls cutting her off.

 Elsie lets go of the cupcake. I feel for her as she sits silently and eats some chips while Milo chomps into the dessert.

 My heart aches for her. 

 “So, Amber, do you want to go to the spa after this?” Miranda asks.

 I ponder for a moment, “What kind of spa?”

 “Oh, it has massages and facials. You know all that good stuff,” She explains. “You’ll love it.”

 “That sounds nice,” I reply. “I kind of want to lie down for a bit,” I say as my body aches. I don’t know if it's from the pregnancy or what.

 “Aches?” Miranda smirks, and I nod. “Yeah, you should lie down for a bit then. We have all week. But trust me, the spa will help with your pregnancy.”

 I shudder when she mentions it. I am still not accepting that I am pregnant with at least two pups, maybe more. I know it was inevitable, but I am still somewhat in denial. I say nothing else and finish my meal. I stand up, “Where am I staying?” I ask.

 “Cassia,” Carlton snaps his fingers to his fiancée.

 Cassia is mid-bite and glances at Carlton.

 “Show Amber her room,” Carlton orders her.

 “I’m eating- “

 “Come back and finish eating,” Carlton grumbles. He pokes her arm, “Though you can skip a few meals,” He chuckles.

 Cassia frowns and sets her food down, and stands up. 

She smooths her dress and hurries towards me, “This way,” She gestures.

 I feel bad that she had to interrupt her lunch. I look at Tyler and Skylar, “I’ll see you guys later, I guess.”

 Tyler stands up to kiss me while Skylar looks toward his cousin. My heart aches slightly as I follow Cassia out of the dining room.

 “I’m really sorry to interrupt your lunch,” I tell Cassia.

 “It’s alright,” She sighs.

 “Why do you let Carlton treat you like shit?” I blurt out.

 She freezes and puts her finger to her lips, “He treats me like a queen,” she says quietly and rushes down the hall. Cassia leads me into a room with a stark white décor. Everything, down to the paintings and statues, is all white. “I know it seems bright, but if you touch this button,” She explains and the blinds lower, and the lights go out, and it becomes pretty dark in the room with a sparkling star display on the blinds.

 “Wow,” I laugh. “This is pretty cool.”

 “Yes,” Cassia grins and punches the button again. “This will take it back to normal,” She mentions as the lights go out, the blinds rise, and everything turns white again. 

 “Thank you,” I tell her. “You can go back to your lunch now.”

 She smiles and nods. “Thanks.” She lingers awkwardly, “You really don’t like Carlton, do you?”

 I stare at her for a moment. “I don’t know if it’s a matter of like, but he gives me a very uneasy feeling.”

 “You should have an uneasy feeling around him,” she says in a lowered voice. “He bought me from my parents. My mother is a medium, as am I. That’s how I sensed your power.”

 I tense up as she speaks, “He bought you?”

 “My father is sick and can’t work, “She explains. “Carlton is paying their bills, so they aren’t on the street. I have three younger siblings as well. I would do anything for them.”

 I lightly touch her arm, “I’m sorry.”

 “I’m not,” She smiles. “Just be careful,” She mutters before leaving the room.

 I shudder as I look around. My luggage is sitting beside the door. I pick it up and move it toward the closet. I then sit on the large plush bed and sigh. Sleep is taking over, so I push the button to lower the lights and kick off my shoes before lying down. It takes almost no time before I fall into a deep sleep.

My dreams seem pleasant. 

I am with my family at a large gathering. They are all laughing and celebrating. Then it turns dark. 

‘Wake up,’ Lilith’s voice echoes, and I get a strange feeling.

I open my eyes to see Marcellus Lafayette hovering over me. He grins as he suddenly presses his hand over my mouth. I try to scream, but everything goes black.
