Deep in the Denial

 Amber stops fighting the moment Tyler, and I told her that she is pregnant. Her expression goes from angry to neutral. She stands for a moment with her head down, chewing on her lip. “I’m not pregnant,” She shakes her head.

 ‘Oh, she is definitely pregnant,’ Pollux confirms. 

 “Honey, you are pregnant,” Tyler tells her while trying to pull her towards him.

 She swats him away. “Fuck!” She says angrily and starts to walk away.

 “Where are you going?” I demand. “You can’t go find your family,” I try to grab her, but she keeps pulling away from me.

 “Just leave me the fuck alone!” She yells at me. “You two have done enough to me,” She growls and keeps walking. 

 Tyler and I try to follow her, but Dad steps in front of her, “Let her cool off, boys.”

 “Dad, we don’t want her running off,” Tyler counters.

 “We’ll keep an eye on her,” Dawna Milford offers. Her two sons are standing behind her, “Boys."

 “Yes, Ma,” One of them answers. They nod at me and follow Amber.

 I sigh as I watch my mate disappear. I notice Amber’s grandmother calmly speaking with Alpha Martin. 

 She glances at me and gives me a wry smile, “Amber will be okay.”

 “I know she will. How can you be so calm when you mate may be dead?” I ask.

 Phyllis shrugs, “If Norman was dead, then I would know.”

 “And I called home, and Nina said that Dylan isn’t dead,” Alpha Martin adds. “So, we have hope. I have already sent the Squad in their direction.”

 “I can send people too, Henry,” Dad offers.

 “Thank you, Victor,” Alpha Henry nods. 

 “What about Amber?” I mutter. “She seemed awfully angry.”

 “She’s like her mother,” Phyllis chuckles.

 “Amber’s mother was angry upon finding out that she was pregnant?” I wonder.

 “Not angry, frustrated,” Phyllis replies. “But it didn’t take long for her to be utterly attached to her unborn pup. And I have faith that Amber will be the same.”

 I sigh as my stomach rumbles. “I’m hungry,” I mutter.

 “We are leaving for home after breakfast,” Dad announces. 

 “I thought we were staying for the verdict,” Tyler states.

 “I just want to get home,” Dad sighs. “Besides, your mom says that Corie is doing a lot better, and I want to see my girl.”

 “Okay, Dad,” I respond and walk towards the cafeteria. The food smells good but I find that my appetite is almost nonexistent, so I just get a bowl of fruit with some granola. I sit at a table and stare at the food. I slowly nibble on a piece of melon, but it’s not satisfying. 

 “Hey, kid,” Uncle Carlton suddenly sits down in front of me with a tray full of food. “Not eating?” He asks.

 “I’m hungry, but nothing looked good,” I mumble.

 “You sound upset,” He smiles. “You just found out that you are going to be a father, and you sound bummed,” Uncle Carlton chuckles.

 I sigh, “You already know?” 

 “Everyone knows, son,” My uncle laughs again as he takes a sip of coffee. 

 “Well, my mate isn’t exactly thrilled about it,” I say and bite into a bit of kiwi.

 “Oh, she sounds like the kind of she-wolf that Jessica was,” He mentions his mate. “That’s why I lost faith in fated mates,” He explains. “She left me with our son like he was nothing,” He shakes his head. “Some she-wolves are somehow born without a maternal instinct.”

 “Yeah,” I nod.

 “Whatever happened to your chosen mate?” Uncle Carlton presses. “She was cute. I liked her.”

 “She was,” I agree. “She found her mate, and he turned out to be an abusive asshole.”

 “Really? Who?” Uncle Carlton asks.

 “Oliver Timmons,” I respond.

 “Oh shit,” Carlton laughs.

 “Then, after Savannah rejected Oliver, she went to Amber’s old pack, Shadow Winds,” I continue.

 “Hmm,” My uncle is hanging on my story.

 “And she found her second chance mate, some dude named Dewey,” I snort.

 “Dewey,” Uncle Carlton lets out a raucous laugh, “What kind of stupid ass name is Dewey?” 

 “Yeah, tell me about it,” I set my fork down and push my food away.

 “Do you still love Savannah?” My uncle laughs. “I mean, I see that you care about that Amber, but- “

 “I still love Savannah,” I reply. “But it’s not like how I felt before I met Amber.”

 “I know how that is,” Carlton nods. “I thought Jessica would be my everything, but oh no,” He shakes his head. “The old moon bitch felt I deserved a cheating cunt for a mate.”

 “You told us that,” I reply.

 “And I am telling you again, Skylar,” He touches my arm. “Find your own love. You may care about your fated mate, but- “

 “I love her,” I interrupt him.

 “Yes, I get that,” he chuckles. “Do you truly love her, though?”

 “I- “I pause. 

 “That’s what I thought,” He sips his coffee. “I have to go back to the city today,” He mentions. “Maybe you three can come visit.”

 “Things are dangerous right now,” I respond. “There are lots of people and vampires after Amber.”

 “I have plenty of warriors,” He laughs. “She’ll be safe, I promise,” He grins. 

 “Hey, maybe we will. A change of scenery may be good for us,” I nod.

 “That’s a boy, Sky,” Uncle Carlton stands up. “I’ll go talk to your dad about it.” He pushes his tray of food towards me, “Eat something.” He winks and walks away.

 Moments later, Tyler sits down. He looks dejected and just stares at Uncle Carlton’s food.

 “What’s wrong?” I ask my twin.

 “Amber won’t talk to me,” he mutters and picks up a sausage from Uncle Carlton's tray. 

 “I’m not surprised,” I shrug. “I didn’t think she would be that angry about- “

 “Yeah,” Tyler frowns. “I want to be happy, but- “

 “Totally,” I sigh. 

 ‘Be happy,’ Pollux speaks up. ‘She’ll come around.’

 “Pollux says to be happy,” I chuckle.

 “Caster said the same thing,” Tyler sighs and pulls the tray towards him, “You weren’t going to eat this?”

 “Nah, you can have it,” I reply.

 Tyler picks at the food some more and munches on the sausage.

 “Uncle Carlton wants us to go to the city,” I mention to my twin.

 Tyler shrugs, “I guess that would be okay.”

 “Hey, boys,” Dad walks up with Uncle Carlton behind him, “Your uncle says you want to go visit the city.”

 “That would be nice,” I nod. “Just for a couple of days.”

 “It may do you all some good,” Dad smiles and glances back at Carlton, who grins. “So, it’s settled.”

 “You guys can just ride with me in the limo,” Uncle Carlton says. “Maybe a few days in the spa will do you mate some good. And I’ll have Miranda talk to her about pups and stuff.”

 “How is Miranda?” I ask about my cousin Dwight’s chosen mate.

 “Pregnant,” Uncle Carlton replies. “Very much so. That’s why she and Dwight didn’t come.”

 “I’ll have the omegas put their stuff in the car,” Dad chimes in. “Is your stuff packed?”

 “Yeah,” Tyler nods and looks at me.

 I huff, “I’ll go pack really quick.”

 “Good because I want to get on the road,” Carlton mentions. “I’ll meet you all out front.” He says and walks away.

 “You boys better hurry up, so Carlton won’t leave you,” Dad laughs.

 “Uncle Carlton would never leave us,” I argue.

 “Yeah,” Dad nods.

 Tyler and I rise from our seats to leave the cafeteria. We walk in silence for a moment. 

 “So, is it bad that I am happy about us being Dads,” Tyler blurts out.

 “No, it’s not bad,” I shake my head. “We are allowed to be happy, Tyler.”

 “Do you think Amber will come around?”

 I take a deep breath, “I hope so, Ty.”

 We make it up to our room, and the scent of wild raspberries makes me smile. We enter the room, and Amber is sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at her phone. Tears stream down her cheeks, and I am tempted to pull her into my arms.

 She looks up, and her face contorts angrily. 

 “Is everything alright?” Tyler asks.

 She sniffles and shrugs, “My Dad, brother, and grandfather are all fine.”

 “That’s good,” Tyler sits beside her and tries to put an arm around her, and she scrambles off the bed. 

 “I don’t really want to be touched right now,” She mutters. She backs into me, and I touch her arm. Amber growls and backs away from me. “Just- “She trails off.

 “Are you really that mad?” Tyler approaches her.

 “I don’t know what I am, Tyler,” She shakes her head. “I just know I am not happy.” 

 “Being a mother is the greatest gift a woman can receive,” I tried to reason with her.

 “Oh, yay,” She grumbles. “I am going to be a broodmare just like Regina. Goodbye, life.”

 “Your life just began,” Tyler counters.

 Amber rolls her eyes, “Can we just not talk about it,” she says with disgust.

 Tyler gulps and sighs, “Yeah, I guess.”

 “Is your stuff packed?” I ask.

 “Yeah,” Amber nods without looking at me.

 “We are going with Uncle Carlton to the city,” I tell her.

 “Why?” Amber snorts.

 “To get away for a few days,” I respond, trying not to let her attitude get to me. “There is a spa that you may like. Maybe you can get a massage or something like that.”

 Amber ponders for a second, “That does sound kind of nice.”

 “We’ll take you to Jasmine,” Tyler suggests. “It is the best restaurant ever.”

 A smile works its way onto Amber’s face, “I guess that doesn’t sound terrible.” 

 “Let me throw my crap in my bag,” I state and run around, throwing my stuff into my bag. Amber sits on the edge of her bed with her phone. 

 “So, you said your family is alright?” Tyler says.

 Amber sniffles, “Yeah, I guess they just had car trouble. Or that’s what my dad said.”

 “See?” Tyler pats her shoulder. “I know they would be okay.”

 I finish packing just as there is a knock on the door. I open it to Dad.

 “Are you kids ready?” Dad grins. “Carlton is waiting.”

 “Yeah,” I nod.

 Dad steps into the room with a couple of omegas. “Take their bags downstairs to Carlton Brook’s limo,” He instructs them. He looks at Amber, “I hear your dad and family are fine.”

 “Yeah, they are,” Amber mutters.

 “Thank the Goddess for that, huh?” Dad smiles at her. “Short of a nuclear bomb, there isn’t much that can take out Norman Martin,” He laughs.

 “Yeah,” Amber wipes her nose and stands up. 

 “You’ll have fun in the city,” Dad tells her. “My brother is a character.”

 We leave the room and start down the hallway. Amber trails behind us. I try to pull her near, but she resists me. Pollux whimpers in my head. It’s like we have gone back to day one.

 Tyler looks at me with a sad expression. 

 Amber’s uncle and grandmother are waiting when we get outside. She hugs them each.

 “It’s going to be alright, dear,” Phyllis tells her. “You are going to be an excellent mother.”

 Amber rolls her eyes and looks away from her grandmother. “Tell Grandpa I love him.”

 “I will,” Phyllis pats her arm,

 Amber walks over to the grand limo, where a driver clad in a black uniform is waiting. She slides into the vehicle. Tyler and I say goodbye to Dad and the others, then get into the limo. Amber is curled up towards the front of the limo. She is looking out the window as we slide towards her. She shrinks away from us.

 It hurts my heart, but I know I need to let her breathe. I sit in the back with Uncle Carlton while Tyler stays near Amber. She ignores all of us as the car pulls away.

 I sat silently, watching her play with her phone, and then set it down to sleep. I settle into my seat and play Bitlife on my phone.

 The ride to the city is mostly silent as we are all lost in our own thoughts. Uncle Carlton spends some time on the phone. Several hours later, we finally reach Starhaven and stop in front of the Brooks Tower. 

 Tyler wakes Amber up, and she looks around bleary-eyed. She looks out the window and gasped.

 “Impressive, isn’t it?” Uncle Carlton chuckles. “Welcome to Starhaven, Amber.”
