 I just stood there and watched them leave. My mate and twin brother walked out the door, and neither looked back. 

Even though I rejected her, I was feeling the pain. My heart was breaking. Pollux was silent in my head, and for once, I felt alone. I felt like no one else in the world was here for me.

 I sit on the couch and stare at the door. I keep wondering if I should go after Amber and Tyler. Should I apologize? ‘Pollux,’ I call to my wolf, but he does not answer. “Two of the pups are mine,” I say out loud.

 “You surely fucked up, didn’t you?” Carlton’s fiancée steps into the room. “Did you really reject your mate?”

 I slowly nod while staring at the ground. “I didn’t mean to.”

 Cassia lets out a dry laugh, “No, you meant to. You fell into Carlton’s ploy, and now our world is on the verge of collapse.”

 I give her a look of confusion, “It’s not that bad.”

 “You really don’t know what you set in motion, do you, Skylar?” Cassia looks me in the eye. “This was Carlton’s plan the entire time. He has been scheming to install Dwight as the next alpha of Nightstar.”

 My blood runs cold as she speaks.

 “He knew that he would achieve his goal, and you just handed him the win,” Cassia says. “Now we will all suffer.”

 I stare at her as she leaves the room, “Why are you here? You don’t sound like you even like my uncle.”

 “I hate him,” Cassia breathes out. “I am only here to keep Carlton from killing my family,” She spits and walks out of the room.

 I sit and stare at the door again. ‘I’m sorry, Pollux,’ I call to my wolf, but he refuses to answer me. ‘Do you hate me?’ I ask the silence.

 I stand from the couch and pace the living room for a few minutes. Then I see that Milo and Elsie are watching me. “Hi,” I say to them.

 “What are you doing?” Milo asks. 

 He looks up at me with a bright-eyed expression. I imagine my pups looking at me like that for a moment. Tears well up in my eyes, “Nothing, Milo. I am doing nothing.”

 “Why?” The curious pup tilts his head. 

 “I am a coward.”

 Milo giggles, “Coward. Coward, coward,” He chants and dances around the room.

 “Mommy wants us to be quiet, Milo,” Elsie tells her brother.

 Milo sticks his tongue out to his sister, “Shut up. You are not the boss of me.”

 “Where is your mommy?” I ask Elsie.

 “She is sleeping. She says our baby brother will be here soon,” Elsie responds.

 “Then we will be moving to the castle where Mommy and Daddy will be king and queen,” Milo adds.

 “Who said that?” I wonder.

 “Grandpa,” Milo responds. “Daddy is going to be the king.”

 I sigh and sit down. I bury my face in my hands, “What have I done?” I mutter.

 “What have you done?” Elsie asks and pokes my arm.

 “Stop,” I mumble to her.

 “Elsie!” Miranda shouts.

 I look up, and she enters the room. “She isn’t bothering me.”

 “She is always a bother,” Miranda glares at her daughter, who retreats from me.

 Elsie looks at the ground as her brother runs over to their mother. 

 “Why are you so harsh towards your daughter?” I ask.

 “She was born the wrong gender,” Miranda snorts. “And Dwight and Carlton haven’t let me forget it.”

 I narrow my eyes, “It’s not her fault.” I look at Elsie, standing in the corner of the room. 

 Miranda shrugs and smiles at Milo. I watch them interact while Elsie stands still.

 I gesture to her, “Hey, Elsie.”

 Elsie smiles at me.

 “Elsie, stop bothering Skylar,” Miranda barks.

 I frown as my world continues to shatter. The man I admired the most turned out to be a snake. I should have seen through his treachery. And here I was, alone when I should be with my mate and twin. “I am going to be a dad,” I whisper.

 “I hope you have healthy sons,” Miranda coos at Milo who giggles.

 “I hope I have healthy pups, period,” I stand up. “I have to get them back,” I declare and march towards the door. I open it to several warriors standing in my way.

 “Oh, you can’t leave,” Miranda says.

 I turn to me, “Excuse me?”

 “You cannot leave the building,” she says slowly. 

 “What?” I turn to the warriors and try to charge my way through them. I fight through two as three more run toward the door. I call on Pollux for help, but he refuses to speak. ‘Pollux, I need you,’ I cry as I am beaten to the ground far too easily. 

 “You cannot leave, Skylar,” One of the warriors says in a familiar voice, and I look up to see Cal Walker hovering over me.

 “What the fuck?” I growl.

 He grins and kneels, “The plan is in motion, Skylar,” He laughs. “Take him back into the penthouse,” Cal snaps his fingers, and I am lifted from the ground and dragged back into the apartment. I am dropped to the ground.

 “Pollux,” I say desperately out loud. I slowly get to my feet and stumble to the couch.

 “Do you want something to drink?” Miranda asks.

 I glare at her, “No, I want to leave.”

 “Too bad,” Miranda stands up while holding her large belly. “Milo, Elsie, come on,” She beckons her pups. Milo clasps her hand, and she leads them out. Elsie looks back at me before following her mother and brother.

 I stand up and wander to my room. I find my phone and dial my father’s number. It rings several times before going to voicemail. “Dad, it’s Skylar,” I breathe out. “Call me now, please.” I drop the phone on the bed and sit. I wait a moment and then try to call my mother. Again, it rings and goes to voice mail. “Fuck,” I lay down and stare at the ceiling. ‘Pollux?’ I try getting a response, but my wolf is silent as a rock. ‘I hate myself too,’ I say to him. ‘I wish I could take it back,’ I mutter. I close my eyes and fall into darkness. I am woken up by my phone ringing. “Hey, Mom,” I answer it.

 “Skylar!” Mom shouts, and I hear the alarms going off in the background.

 “Mom, what’s going on?” I shout.

 “We are under attack, Skylar. Your father- “she trails off. “I think he’s dead,” she cries.

 “What?” I yell.

 “I need you all home now,” she cries.

 “Mom, Tyler, and Amber are gone,” I tell her.

 “What do you mean gone?” She shouts.

 “Mom,” I hear my sister cry out.

 “Stay here, Corie,” Mom tells her. “What do you mean Tyler is gone? Where is he?”

 “I rejected Amber, and she left with Tyler,” I blurt out.

 “Skylar!” Mom screams. “Come home.”

 “I can’t,” I sigh.

 “Skylar- “the phone goes dead.

 “Mom, Mom?” I yell. I throw the phone across the room and run out of the room. 

Cal Walker is blocking the door. “Get the fuck out of my way, Walker,” I growl.

 “Can’t do that, sir,” He grins at me. “Alpha’s orders are to stay here and watch you burn.”

 I ball up my fist and punch Cal as hard as I can, “I am the Alpha!”

 “Not anymore,” Cal grins while wiping blood from his chin. “You aren’t anything. And in three days, you will not even have a mate.” He tells me. “Maybe I’ll finally have a shot with her.”

 A growl rumbles out of me, and I charge Cal. I slam into the door as he sidesteps.

 “Oh, what’s wrong? Is your wolf not helping you fight? Didn't you know that rejecting your mate weakens your wolf?” Cal laughs before he punches me, and I black out.
