Saving Corie

Amber

 

 I wake up in Skylar’s arms as someone is pounding on the door. The twins stir as the door slams open, and Victor stomps in.

 “Why aren’t you kids awake?” He snarls. “We need to get going.”

 I lift my head, look at the clock, and gasp, “I thought I set an alarm,” I say as I crawl over Tyler and grab my phone. I blush when I realize we are all naked, and Victor is standing at the end of the bed. I groan when I see that my alarm hadn’t been set. “I can’t believe I forgot,” I mutter.

 “You were busy,” Skylar snorts.

 I huff as Victor growls.

 “It’s not funny, Skylar. Today is important,” Victor explains. 

 I shudder at the thought that I will be on trial today. Even though everyone keeps assuring me that I won’t be punished. Still, I have an uneasy feeling that everything won’t be okay.

 “Get your assses up and downstairs in ten minutes,” He wrinkles his nose, “Twenty minutes. Wash the sex stank off before getting dressed,” He states and stomps out of the room.

 I slide off the bed, and my legs nearly go out from under me, causing Skylar to laugh hysterically. I glare at him.

 “I got you good last night,” He saunters over to me, wraps an arm around me, and kisses my cheek.

 I slap his chest, “Yeah, yeah,” I mutter and pull away. I wobble into the bathroom with them behind me. I turn on the shower and step in. I stand under the water for a second until they join me. Tyler wraps me up in his arms and begins kissing me. I nudge him away, “I just want to take a shower.”

 Tyler kisses me again and sighs, “It’s going to be okay, honey.” He unwraps his arms but runs his hands through my hair, “You have such beautiful hair.” 

 The tingles make me feel better and settle my stomach. I concede and let my mates wash me. 

 “There, doesn’t that feel better?” Skylar says in the gentle tone I had heard him use with Savannah.

 I nod, “Yeah.”

 We exit the shower and quickly dry off. They walk with me into the closet, and I stare at my clothes, wondering what to wear. I finally chose one of my more professional outfits and put it on. I brush my hair and put it in a braid. I stare at myself in the mirror, smooth my jacket, and run my hands down my black pencil skirt. 

 “You look beautiful,” Tyler says and kisses my cheek. He is dressed in a blue suit, and Skylar in a dark brown one. Tyler has his hair slicked back while Skylar’s is spiked.

 “Are you kids ready?” Sheila shouts into the room.

 “We are coming, Mom,” Skylar responds.

 We step into the room, and Sheila smiles at us. “I wish I could go, but I need to stay with Corie,” she approaches us. She directs her gaze at me, “I never thanked you for saving Victor’s life. I don’t know what I would have done if he died,” Sheila pats my cheek. “You will be okay. I know it. You did nothing wrong.”

 I give her a soft smile.

 “You guys better get going,” Sheila chuckles. “Victor is waiting impatiently.”

 “Bye, Mom,” Skylar kisses her cheek.

 “Yeah, tell Corie bye for us,” Tyler kisses her other cheek.

 Sheila clasps their arms, “Look at my boys. You look so grown up.”

 “We are grown up, Mom,” Skylar huffs.

 Sheila pinches his cheek, “You will always be my baby, Skylar Vincent.”

 “Oh shit, Dad is pissed,” Tyler snorts. “Let’s go,” He pulls on my arm.

 I wave at Sheila, “Tell Corie I said bye.”

 We rush out of our room and down the stairs. Victor is waiting by a limo with my grandmother and Dawna. Victor’s foot is tapping madly on the ground as we approach. 

 “Long shower, huh?” He grumbles.

 “We just showered, Dad,” Skylar snarls.

 “Get in the fucking limo,” He points.

 “Where are Dale and Jake?” I ask Dawna.

 “They are in the SUV,” Dawna points to one of the SUVs behind the limo. 

 We slide into the limo, and I sit in between my mates. Grandma sits across from me with a huge grin on her face.

 “What, Grandma?” I ask.

 She shakes her head and says nothing while Dawna leans over and whispers in her ear, “Yep,” Grandma giggles.

 I lean on Skylar’s shoulder while Tyler touches my knee. I close my eyes, and before I know It, I wake up lying across the seat with my feet in Tyler’s lap and my head in Skylar’s.

 “You snore when you sleep like that, “Skylar remarks.

 I sit up, “Are we there yet?” I ask as the limo stops.

 “Not yet,” Victor speaks up. “We are just making a pit stop.”

 I look out the window, and we are stopped in a rest area. “I do have to pee really bad,” I mutter and climb over Skylar to get out the door first.

 Grandma and Dawna giggle behind me as I rush into the building. 

 “What are you two giggling about?” I snort.

 “Nothing,” Grandma laughs as we walk into the damp bathroom. 

 There is a long row of stalls and lots of other women inside. A few of them have children in tow. One woman stares at me with fear as she corrals her three small children. “Hombre-Lobo,” She repeats over and over.

 I rush into a stall and slam the door behind me. I hear the woman still repeating the same thing. Dawna says something, and the woman stops talking. After doing my business, I leave the stall to wash my hands. I am flanked by two women. I look up and notice they are both rather pale and not washing their hands. 

 “I have to thank you for freeing my husband,” one of them says in a low tone with a strange accent.

 “Your hus-“ I say as my mouth is covered. I try to scream, and then everything goes black. I wake up later in the limo lying between Skylar and Tyler. “What the?” I mutter as I try to sit up.

 “Those slimy vampires tried getting you again,” Dawna states. “But it’s okay. We took care of them.”

 “Huh?” I say with mild confusion. “Are they dead?”

 “Of course,” Skylar snorts. “Tyler killed one of them bitches, and your grandma killed the other.”

 I get chills when I realize who one of the women was, “I think one of them was Barabas’s wife.”

 “Who?” Victor speaks up.

 “Barabas,” I repeat. “He was the one we-“

 “You freed,” Victor interrupts me. “You freed him. I wouldn’t have.”

 I shake my head. “They tried to grab me?”

 “It’s too bad that vampires can move about in the daylight now,” Dawna snarls. “That Marcellus Lafayette did something to make it so they don’t burn anymore.”

 “Wait, he changed them?” I ask.

 “Most likely with our family's blood,” Grandma chimes in. “A hundred years ago, vampires burnt to a crisp in the daylight, but now they wander about day and night.”

 I sigh and lean against the seat. “I am not going to be able to go anywhere, am I?”

 “We’ll kill them, Amber,” Tyler joins in. “Once we kill Marcellus, it will all be over.”

 “Don’t be so sure of that,” Dawna shakes her head. 

 “Who do we have to worry about?” Tyler asks.

 “Everyone else,” Dawna sighs.

 I shudder and fold my arms. The limo stops, and I look out the window at the Silver Moon Manor. “We are here already?”

 “You were out for almost two hours,” Tyler tells me.

 “Huh?”

 The door opens, and we file out of the limo. I stagger as I step out, and Skylar catches me. I smile up at him, and he kisses my forehead. 

 “Amber,” I hear my father shout and see him approaching us with other family members.

 I run over and almost fall into his arms, “Dad.”

 “Hey, Ambs,” I look up to see my brother beside our father.

 I let go of my father to hug Dylan, “How is it going?” I look around. “Nina didn’t come?”

 “She is staying home with Luke,” Dylan states.

 I let go of my brother and saw my grandfather hugging my grandmother. Uncle Henry is standing a few feet away with Aunt Rachael and my cousin Kaylee.

 “Amber,” Kaylee squeals and runs over to me.

 I hug her and then hug my aunt. Uncle Henry pats my back, and I hug him. “Deacon, didn’t come?” I wonder.

 “He has a pack to run, sweetheart,” Uncle Henry chuckles.

 “Amber, Amber. Amber,” My grandfather walks over to me, wagging his finger at me. 

 “Hi, Grandpa,” I say as he hugs me.

 He holds me tight, “Your mother would be so proud of you.”

 “For what?” I wiggle out of his strong arms. “I killed an alpha.”

 “Good riddance to that mess,” Grandpa huffs.

 “Dad,” Uncle Henry chides him. 

 “There you are, Ed,” Grandpa looks past me.

 Edmund Cleary is approaching us wearing his Council robe. There are a couple of other Council members behind him. One is scowling at my grandfather.

 “Good to see your scowling face, Beau,” Grandpa says sarcastically.

 “Norm,” Councilman Cleary drawls. “Don’t start anything.”

 “I’m not starting anything, Ed,” Grandpa throws his hands up.

 Edmund rolls his eyes and looks at me, “The trial will start in a few minutes. You may all go into the chamber.”

 I nod as my father puts an arm around my shoulder. I hear one of the twins growl.

 “What?” Dad glances back. “You can have her back after the trial.”

 We go into a large round chamber with a high domed ceiling. There are rows of seats facing the bench where the Council sits. We walk to the front and sit down. I sit between my father and Uncle while the twins and their father sit behind me. 

 “What’s with you and Alpha Millar?” I hear Victor ask my grandfather.

 “You never heard that story, Vic?” Uncle Henry laughs.

 “I can tell my own stories, Henry,” Granpda snarks. “You know I was a member of the council, right?”

 “Of course,” Victor nods. “I remember you were suddenly dismissed.”

 “Why?” Tyler chimes in.”

 “Because Beaudry Millar is an asshole,” Grandpa responds.

 “I know that,” Victor laughs.

 “Dad punched him during a meeting,” Uncle Henry explains. 

 I laugh as I remember the story. I was only ten when it happened. My mother told me the story and couldn’t stop laughing. I tear up at the memory. Dad squeezes my shoulder, “Remembering your Mom, huh?”

 I nod at him as a tear falls down my cheek, “How did you guess?”

 “You always get that look when you remember her,” He wipes the tear. “She’s here watching over all of us.”

 I sniffle and feel a hand on my other shoulder. I look up to see Skylar smiling at me.

 “You know I saw the memory,” He states.

 “I didn’t know-“

 “Our wolves have that ability,” Dad responds. 

 “You look like your Mom,” Tyler joins in.

 “You saw it too?” I ask.

 He smiles. 

 “You know this, Amber,” Dad chuckles. “We taught you about how mates work.”

 “I may have tuned that out,” I settle into the chair.

 I watch as Edmund Cleary walks up to the highest point of the desk and stands with his hands up.

 “We will come to order,” A man standing in front of the bench says. He is dressed in an all-black uniform with a gun holster strapped to his belt. 

 “Today is a hearing to decide the fate of one Amber Elyse Payne for the killing of Alpha Keith John Timmons of the Dark Knights Pack,” Councilman Cleary explains. “Amber, please rise and approach,” He directs me.

 I glance at my family before rising and approaching.

 “Hang her!” Someone shouts.

 I glance back at Jason Timmons standing with Zachary Timmons and several others glaring at me.

 “Silence,” Edmund orders.

 I look at the ground as I stand before the bench.

 “Amber,” Edmund says gently, “Look at us.”

 I raise my head to look.

 “Why did you kill Alpha Timmons?” He asks.

 I look between him and the other council members. Councilman Beaudry Millar is looking hard at me. He and my grandfather have been rivals for years. He is the reason my grandfather was expelled from the Council. I take a deep breath, “I did it in defense of Alpha Victor Brooks.”
