 I lean back in my seat as my uncle approaches the bench. I hadn’t known they aimed to take down the Dark Knights Pack. I glance at my father, “Dad?”

 He leans over, “The trouble with the Timmons family goes beyond what they did to you and Savannah,” He whispers.

 I nod as Uncle Henry glances back at us with his eyebrows raised. I clamp my mouth shut as I feel a hand on my shoulder. I look up at Tyler’s smiling face.

 “Your Honors,” Uncle Henry begins. “As many of you know, I have been investigating The Dark Knights Pack, among others, for some time now. They have been accused of trafficking and other crimes. They have also tried numerous times to kidnap my niece Amber Payne, and before that, they were paid to kidnap my sister Catherine Martin-Payne, resulting in her death.”

 I let out an audible gasp, and my uncle looks back at me. “Dad?”

 He pats my knees and gives me a look that tells me to be quiet. 

 The memories of my mother getting killed before my eyes flash through my mind. Tears roll down my cheeks, and I sense both of my mates right behind me. Tyler wipes a tear from my cheek.

 “You know we can see what you are seeing,” He whispers.

 I shake my head and lean into him. Skylar lightly grazes my arms, “It’s okay, Amber.” 

 The images fade as I relish the comfort of my mates.

 “Alpha Keith Timmons paid one of my pack members to kidnap my niece,” Uncle Henry testified.

 “Why would Alpha Timmons want your niece?” Councilman Millar huffs. He glances at me, and I get a chill down my spine.

 Uncle Henry glances at my grandmother and gestures for her to rise, “My mother, Phyllis Martin, would like to explain.”

 Grandma smiles at me, rises from her seat, and approaches the bench. “Good afternoon, your honors,” She greets them. “As most of you know, I am the former Luna of Shadow Winds. Before that, I lived in the Thunder Rock Pack, where my great-nephew David Hunt is now the alpha.”

 “What the hell does that have to do with this case?” Councilman Millar snarls at my grandmother, causing my grandfather to stand up.

 “Sit down, Norman,” Edmund instructs him.

 “I don’t like how Beau growled at my mate,” Grandpa grumbles.

 “Everything is under control,” Edmund looks him in the eye. “If Beaudry gets out of control, we will take care of it. Sit down, or I will have you removed.”

 “Asshole,” Grandpa mutters and sits down in a huff.

 Grandma glares at Grandpa before turning her attention to the Council. “Before I was rudely interrupted,” She directs her gaze at Beaudry Millar. “I was about to explain that my family is the last of the royals. My great-grandfather Duncan Arco was the last king.”

 There is a low gasp among the people in the chamber. Councilman Cleary bangs his gavel as the chatter rises. “Quiet down,” He bellows.

 Grandma clears her throat, “My granddaughter, Amber Payne is the next Queen of us all,” she announces to more loud murmurs. 

 “Bullshit,” Councilman Millar shouts. “We got rid of the royals for a reason!”

 Edmund bangs his gavel, “Quiet in the chamber!” He orders. People continue talking, and I can sense the rising tension in the room. “I said quiet, or I will clear the chamber!” 

 The chamber quiets, and Grandma clears her throat, “The Goddess has chosen Amber Payne and her mates Skylar and Tyler Brooks as the next rulers.”

 “I will not submit to any royals!” Councilman Millar shouts.

 Others begin shouting, and the chamber erupts into chaos. Something flies through the air, and I am struck on the head and blackout.

 “Amber,” Tyler shouts as I come to. 

 I am lying in his arms while everyone else stands outside the chamber.

 “What happened?” I mutter.

 “Colter Millar threw a rock at you,” Skylar growls.

 I sit up and still feel dizzy, “Really?” I touch my head and hiss at the pain. 

 “Yeah, you should have seen it,” Tyler laughs. “Your father and Grandpa rushed him and started punching. Edmund Cleary had to send in the guards to pull them apart.”

 “Are they in trouble?” I say with worry.

 “Is she alright?” Councilman Cleary steps toward us

 “My head hurts,” I mutter.

 “The medic said she would be fine,” Victor says,

 “Are my dad and Grandpa in a lot of trouble?” I ask Edmund.

 “They did start fighting with Colter and Beaudry Millar,” Edmund sighs.

 “They were defending her,” Skylar growls. “I would have punched the asshole too.”

 “Skylar,” Victor drawls.

 Edmund shakes his head, “If you are alright to continue, Amber, we will return to the chamber.”

 Tyler helps me to my feet, and I lean into him, “I’m fine.” 

 “Are you sure?” Tyler asks, and I nod.

 “Okay, we will resume in five minutes,” Edmund tells us.

 We walk back towards the chamber, and my grandmother is talking to my uncle and Dawna. 

 “Are you okay, dear?” Grandma touches my forehead, and I wince.

 “I’m fine when people don’t poke my head,” I mutter.

 Grandma and Dawna both laugh. 

 “How much trouble are Dad and Grandpa going to be in?” I ask my grandmother, and her expression darkens.

 “A lot,” She mumbles.

 We file into the chamber, and I sit between my mates. I am comforted by their protective aura. I lean my head on Tyler’s shoulder and place my hand on Skylar’s knee. Tyler strokes my upper arm while Skylar holds my hand.

 Grandma approaches the bench. 

 “Phyllis, you may begin at any time,” Edmund tells her.

 She clears her throat, “My granddaughter, Amber, is going to be the new queen no matter what anyone has to say,” She announces.

 There is angry chatter in the chamber, and Councilman Cleary bangs his gavel, “I will clear the chamber again,” He grumbles. 

 I notice that Councilman Millar and a few other council members are absent.

 “When will Amber and her mates become our rulers?” Edmund asks my grandmother.

 “Two full moons from now, the Goddess will come down and decide if Amber Payne and the Brooks will be ready to become the Kings and Queen of us all,” Dawna says in a strange robotic tone. 

 Everyone directs their gaze to the witch.

 “Ms. Milford, you are speaking out of turn,” Edmund says in an annoyed tone.

 “I was merely relaying what your Goddess told me to say,” Dawna huffs and sits down.

 There is more chatter in the chamber, and I glance back at Dawna. ‘I’ll talk to you later,’ She mouths to me.

 “Quiet in the chamber,” Edmund Cleary bangs his gavel. “Now, I know a lot of you are unhappy about the royals returning, but if it is the will of the Goddess, then who are we to argue.”

 “No royals!” Someone shouts behind us.

 “Silence,” Edmund orders the person. He takes a deep breath, “Alpha Martin, please step forward so you can finish your testimony.”

 My uncle rises from his seat and stands next to Grandma. 

 “You may sit now, Phyllis,” Edmund tells her.

 Grandma shrugs and plods back to us. She sits beside my brother. 

 Uncle Henry finishes his testimony, and the Council adjourns for the day to make their decision about the investigation. 

 I stand with the twins outside of the chamber and feel exhausted. “I just want to sleep,” I say.

 “You should get some rest,” Dawna walks up to me. She reaches toward my forehead, and I flinch, “Oh, calm down,” She gently presses her hand to my head, and it stops hurting. She lingers for a moment and smirks. 

 “What?” I ask.

 “You should get some rest, dear,” Dawna winks and walks away.

 “Dad,” I hear my brother call out and see my father walking down the hall with my grandfather.

 He nods at Dylan and looks at me, “Sorry, honey. I acted on fatherly instinct.”

 “We should have been the ones to defend her,” Skylar grumbles.

 “You did what you needed to do,” Dad replies. “I know you two are her mates, but I will always be her father, and trust me, that instinct to protect your pups never goes away. You’ll understand someday.”

 “Someday is much closer than you think,” Dawna states, and I shudder.

 “I need to lie down,” I throw my hands up. 

 “You don’t want to join us for dinner?” Dad asks.

 I shake my head, “Take me to our room,” I tell Tyler.

 “Amber,” Dad calls to me.

 I turn to him and give him a quick hug. I do the same for the rest of my family. “Goodnight,” I say to them.

 Tyler scoops me up into his arms, and I kick my feet.

 “I can walk, Tyler,” I protest.

 He kisses the tip of my nose, “I know.” 

 I sigh and stop struggling and let him carry me to our room. It’s on the far wing of the Manor in a quiet hallway. 

The room is much smaller than our room at home, with a king bed that seems small. Tyler lays me down and starts to take off my clothes. I again try to protest, but he insists. Skylar stands at the end of the bed, watching.

 “What do you think that crazy witch meant by someday is closer than you think?” Skylar asks.

 “What do you think, Sky?” Tyler responds and then presses his nose to my belly and inhales.

 I try to push him away, “What the hell are you doing?”

 Tyler looks up at me with a disappointed look, “Our Dad told us that male werewolves can detect their unborn offspring before their mates.”

 “And?” I huff.

 “Nothing,” He sighs.

 “Let me try,” Skylar pushes his brother away and lowers his face to my belly. I let out a giggle as it tickles. He inhales and sighs. “Nope.”

 “Thank the Goddess,” I laugh. 

 Skylar sighs and walks away from the bed.

 “I thought you were sleepy?” Tyler asks playfully while taking off his shirt.

 “I am,” I smirk as I look at his chiseled chest. “Want to tuck me in?” 

 Tyler gets a mischievous look, “Sky, do you want to help me put our naughty mate to bed?”

 Skylar makes a lustful growl and rips off his shirt, “Gladly.”
