Skylar

 

 “It’s nice to meet you finally, Amber,” Uncle Carlton greets my mate. 

 I sense tension from Amber as she shakes his hand. She looks away from my uncle and stands next to Tyler. I temporarily ignore it and smile at Uncle Carlton, “When did you get here?” I ask.

 Uncle Carlton grins at me, “Skylar,” He pats my back. “It’s good to see you. I got here a few minutes before the verdict. I had stuff to deal with at the company,” He looks at my father, “You know, the company that sustains your pack.”

 Dad rolls his eyes, “I know, Carl.”

 Uncle Carlton looks at me, “Lovely mate, you got.”

 “She is,” I smile at Amber, who gives me a wry smile and buries her face in Tyler’s shoulder. 

 “Hey, Ty,” Uncle Carlton greets my twin.

 “Dwight didn’t come?” Tyler wonders about our cousin.

 “No,” Carlton huffs. “Something, something about his kids or something.”

 “Come on, kids, let's go to lunch,” Dad tries to herd us away from Uncle Carlton. 

 Amber has peeled herself away from Tyler and is talking to her family. She smiles at me before turning her attention to her brother. I feel a slight uptick of anger. 

 “Aren’t you coming to lunch?” I ask her.

 “I’ll be right there,” she responds while eyeing my uncle.

 I want to ask her about her aversion to Carlton, but I am hungry, “Fine. Don’t take too long,” I drawl and follow my family down the hall. 

 The Manor has a large dining hall set up like a cafeteria, only with better food. I stand behind my brother in line while Dad and Uncle Carlton argue. My mind is all over the place. I am glad that Amber has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the killing of Keith Timmons. But I am apprehensive about what is to come. 

 I walk down the line, and nothing looks good, so I get a couple of slices of cheese pizza and a side salad. We sit down at a long table.

 “I told you not to do that, Carl,” Dad yells at his brother.

 “What’s going on?” I ask Tyler.

 My twin shrugs, “I guess Uncle Carlton put money into something Dad didn’t want him to.”

 “You put me in charge of the company, Victor,” Carlton hisses. “So, I will put money where I believe it is needed. Our father would have done the same thing.”

 “Don’t bring him into this,” Dad snorts.

 I nibble quietly at my food. I noticed that Tyler got pizza and a salad as well. 

 “Not hungry?” Tyler laughs.

 “My mind is everywhere, and I’m just not hungry,” I mutter.

 “Me neither,” Tyler huffs and sips his juice.

 “You need to trust me, Victor,” Carlton yells at my father.

 I shake my head as the scent of wild raspberries fills my senses, and seconds later, Amber sits beside me with a tray of food. I smile and kiss her cheek.

 “Where is your family?” Tyler asks.

 Amber points across the room, “Over there.”

 “Can I sit with you guys?” Her brother Dylan shows up.

 “Sure,” Tyler responds, and Dylan sits beside him.

 I look at Amber’s tray, and she has almost the same things that Tyler and I have, “You weren’t hungry?”

 “The pizza just looked good,” Amber shrugs and takes a bite.

 “It’s alright,” I laugh.

 “Amber, Nina wanted me to tell you we are having a girl,” Dylan announces.

 “Wonderful,” Amber grins. 

 “When are you having pups?” Dylan asks, and Amber spits juice all over him.

 Tyler and I laugh, and Dylan looks at us.

 “What? I’m serious,” Dylan shrugs.

 “I don’t know if that is going to happen,” Amber shakes her head.

 “It’s going to happen,” I nudge her. “We have been having an awful lot of unprotected sex.”

 Dylan cringes, “Gross, dude. I didn’t need to know that.”

 “Oh, come on, Dylan,” I laugh. “Your sisters both have mates, meaning they are having sex.”

 “I know, Skylar. I don’t need to hear about it,” Dylan grumbles.

 “So, have you thought of names for your daughter?” Amber changes the subject. 

 Dylan hesitates and takes a bite of food.

 “I guess Regina is naming her twins Rory and Hayden,” Amber says.

 “Those are nice names,” Tyler acknowledges. “I like less common names.”

 Amber gives him a look but says nothing. 

 “Nina wants to name our daughter Caitlyn after our mom,” Dylan states. “But I don’t want you to be upset.”

 “Why would I be upset?” Amber asks. “I think that’s a great name.”

 “Really?” Dylan sounds relieved.

 “Yeah, Dylan,” Amber chuckles. “I haven’t even thought of names because I still don’t know if I want pups.”

 I don’t know why her statement angers me, but I suddenly stand up and walk away from the table. 

 “Skylar?” Tyler shouts to me.

 I storm out of the dining hall and wander outside. I find myself standing over the fountain that Tyler and I once swam in. The memory gives me a quick laugh before I return to anger. ‘Why won’t she grow up and accept we will have pups?’ I think to myself.

 ‘Fear,’ Pollux responds.

 ‘Fear? She is a warrior. Warriors don’t have fear,’ I argue.

 ‘You are wrong about that,’ Pollux argues. ‘Warriors have fear. It’s how they manage it that is key.’

 ‘We step so far forward and then get knocked backward,’ I huff.

 “Skylar?” Amber appears beside me. “Are you mad at me?”

 I give her a side-eyed glance and say nothing.

 “Lilith says you are upset with me,” She touches my arm, and I pull away from her.

	‘Talk to her,’ Pollux hisses.

 “Yes, I am upset, Amber,” I finally answer her. “You are adamant that you don’t want pups with me or Tyler.”

 Amber takes a deep breath and folds her arms, “I never saw myself as a mother. I told you this before.”

 “You would be a fine mother,” I tell her. “I see how you are with your niece and nephews. I have seen you interact with the pups around Nightstar. Why don’t you want your own?”

 She shakes her head, “I don’t know, Skylar.”

 “Is it fear?” I ask.

 It’s her turn to give me a side-eyed glance. “I guess,” she answers. “I watched my mother die. I don’t want that to happen to my pups.”

 “But we will be the rulers of the werewolf world. We are going to have to have heirs,” I state. “Are you afraid that Tyler and I won’t do our part? I know you, and I didn’t get off to a good start, but I love you, Amber. I want to have pups with you. Tyler and I will be at your side to raise our pups.”

 Tears well up in Amber’s side, and I pull her into my arms, and she buries her face in my chest, “I do love you, Skylar,” She looks up at me, “I love Tyler too. But- “

 I hook my thumb under her chin, “No buts,” I smirk. “We are in this together.” I lean down and plant my lips on hers. The tingles from the kiss make my knees go weak. “Damn, I love how you taste,” I whisper against her cheek. 

 “Skylar, Amber,” Dad calls to us.

 Amber pulls away from me. Dad and Tyler are a few feet away.

 “What?” I glare at my father.

 “They want us back in the chamber,” Dad gestures and smiles at Amber and then walks away. 

 Tyler lingers, “Is everything alright?”

 “It’s fine,” Amber mutters and walks away.

 Tyler frowns and looks at me.

 “It’s fine, Ty,” I pat his shoulder. “We just needed to talk.” Tyler and I follow Amber into the Chamber. Amber sits with her family while Tyler and I sit behind her. I place a hand on her shoulder, and she looks back at me with a smile.

 The people in the Chamber quiet down when the Council walks in and takes their seats on the bench. “The next item on today’s agenda is the possible dissolution of the Dark Knights Pack,” Councilman Cleary announces to gasps and murmurs. He bangs his gavel, “Quiet in the Chamber. Alpha Martin, you may begin.”
