Mental Sparring

Amber



 The vampires hiss as I run into their group and tackle one to the ground. It’s some ugly male that writhes and screeches as Lilith rips its throat out. Lilith is clawed in the side. She spits out the bloody flesh and launches at the next vampire. I hear crying and glance at the crumpled car to see Sheila lying on the ground. She is covered in blood. I try to approach her, but my wolf is grabbed and slammed to the ground. 

 “Do not harm her,” The man in black hisses. He is staring down at me, wearing a long black trench coat. He is almost handsome, but I look at him with utter hatred.

 Lilith struggles to her feet and tackles another vampire. This one is a woman who screams like a banshee as Lilith rips her head off. ‘Shut up,’ Lilith hisses as she drops the head.

 I hear a scream and see Sheila trying to fight off a vampire. She is trying to stand while waving a large stick at the vampires. Lilith is about to run over when we are tackled and held to the ground. Lilith howls and snaps at the vampires. The one that seems to be the leader trudges towards us with a dark grin.

 “We finally got you, lass,” He starts to kneel, but there is a loud howl. “Shit,” He curses and stands up. 

 The other vampires are distracted, so Lilith throws them off her and tackles one killing it almost instantly. The rest of the vampires again try to capture us. There is another howl, and several wolves, including my mates, burst out of the trees. A black one runs over to the car while my silver mates launch at the vampires surrounding me.

 In no time, the remaining vampires are dispatched, except for one. Lilith sits exhausted on her haunches while her mates lick her wounds.

 ‘Are you hurt?’ Tyler’s worried voice echoes in my mind.

 ‘I’ll be fine,’ I respond. I feel pain and see blood hitting the ground, but I know my wounds are superficial.

 ‘Corie!’ I hear Skylar shout, and he shifts while running over to the car. Victor has his daughter in his arms.

 I shift as I walk over, and Tyler tries to shield my naked body from the warriors. 

Sheila is sitting beside Victor with her legs outstretched. I can see at least one leg is broken. Corie is unconscious in her father’s arms. She is pale and appears to be dead.

 “Hold on, baby,” Victor pleads. “The medics are coming.” He looks up at me, “What happened?”

 “We were just driving along, and this guy,” I pause. “I guess he is a vampire,” I look around, and the guy in black has disappeared. Several warriors are holding the remaining vampire down as it writhes and hisses. Tony and Richard are dragging the other vampire bodies towards a pile.

 “Was he wearing all black?” Skylar interjects. “The guy?”

 I nod, “Yeah. He is a vampire,” I state. “He was standing in the road, and it’s like we hit a forcefield,” I explain as the ambulance is heard rushing towards us. It screeches to a halt, and they immediately run toward Victor and start working on Sheila and Corie. 

 “She’s breathing,” I hear one of the medics say about Corie.

 Another ambulance shows up, and the medics walk toward me. I am leaning against Tyler while Skylar is flanking my other side. I wave them off, “Focus on them,” I point towards Sheila and Corie.

 “You are wounded,” The medic looks at my naked body, causing my mates to growl.

 “I’m fine,” I state.

 “Worry about our mother and sister,” Skylar snarls.

 I watch Sheila and Corie get placed on stretchers and pushed into the ambulances. 

 “Meet us at the hospital,” Victor says and gets into the ambulance with Sheila.

 Tears well up as I watch the vehicles drive away. “I hope Corie is okay,” I sniffle. 

 Tyler keeps his arm around me, “Are you sure you are alright?”

 I nod and look down. Most of my wounds are already healing. “Yeah.”

 “So, the guy in black is a vampire?” Skylar speaks.

 “Have you seen him before?” I ask as an SUV pulls up.

 “Jett will drive you guys to the hospital,” Richard states. “We’ll stay here and clean up.”

 “We took the survivor to the cells,” Tony chimes in.

 “The guy in black told them not to hurt me,” I state, and all of them look at me with shock.

 “Were they trying to kidnap you?” Skylar snarls, and I shrug.

 “That’s what we’ll find out, Sky,” Tyler says as we climb into the car.

 The ride to the hospital is silent. Skylar seems deep in thought while Tyler is stroking my bare skin. I shudder from the tingles. My mind is on Corie and Sheila.

 “Thanks for the rife, Jett,” Tyler says as we pull up to the front of the hospital. 

 “Anytime, Tyler,” Jett nods. “I pray Luna Sheila, and Corie will be okay.”

 “Me too,” I say.

 The three of us are handed clothes as we walk into the building. Nurse Jan steps towards us, “Your mother and sister are still being worked on,” She states.

 More tears well up in my eyes. “We were just going to lunch,” I mutter.

 “Alpha Victor is with Luna Sheila,” Jan says. “We’ll update you as soon as we can.”

 I sigh as we walk over to the seats, and Tyler pulls me into his lap. I snuggle into him while Skylar strokes my arms. “I wish I was normal. I hate that so many people are after me that others are being put in danger.”

 “It’s not your fault,” Tyler whispers as he places little kisses on my neck.

 I close my eyes and bury my face in his bare chest. I catch Skylar silently watching. “Are you mad at me?”

 “No,” He responds with mild anger.

 “Why are you angry?” I wonder.

 “I’m not angry,” Skylar snarls.

 “You sound angry,” I shrug.

 Skylar lets out an annoyed growl, “Okay, I am angry. But not at you, Amber. I am angry at whoever that asshole vampire is.”

 “He didn’t want me harmed,” I state. “I wonder if it has anything to do with Alpha Timmons trying to kidnap me.”

 “I have a feeling it’s connected,” Tyler chimes in.

 We are silent for a moment.

 “How come you don’t love us?” Skylar blurts out.

 “What?” I narrow my eyes at him.

 “Sky,” Tyler complains.

 “Do you not love us?” Skylar asks.

 “What?” I huff.

 “You haven’t said it,” Skylar looks me in the eyes.

 I look away from him. Lilith makes a noise, but I ignore her. 

 “Amber?” Tyler shakes me.

 I sigh and scramble out of his arms and stand up. I turn away from them.

 “So, you don’t love us?” Skylar pushes.

 “I don’t know what I feel,” I turn to them. “Everything is happening so fast. One minute I am just living my life, and then- “I trail off and turn away.

 “We were, too,” Skylar snarls, and I sense him behind me. He presses his strong hands on my shoulders. His hot breath fans my neck. “I knew I loved you the moment I saw you.”

 I shake my head, “Bullshit,” I try to pull away from him. He tightens his grip, and I yelp from the pain.

 “Tell me you don’t love me,” Skylar’s lips hover beside my cheek. 

 “Skylar,” I complain and try to pull away from him again.

 “Dad,” Tyler says.

 Skylar and I turn to see Victor standing in the doorway, looking bedraggled. “Is Mom okay? Corie?” Skylar demands.

 “Your mother will be fine,” Victor states as tears well up in his blue eyes. “She has a broken leg and some broken ribs, but she will heal within a few days.”

 “What about Corie?” Tyler presses.

 Victor looks at the ground, “She- “He pauses.

 “God, Dad, is Corie dead?” Tyler nearly shouts.

 “No,” Victor shakes his head. “But she did flatline twice.”

 I feel myself go pale as I think about Corie. “Is she alright?”

 “No, Amber,” Victor shakes his head. “They are still working on her. I’ll let you all know if they stabilize her. I am going to be with my mate for now,” He mutters.

 “Can we see Mom?” Tyler demands.

 “No, I think it’s best you all return to the house,” Victor says. 

 “Dad,” Tyler complains.

 “I need you three to be strong for the pack. I need to be here with my girls. Please?”

 “Dad,” Tyler squeezes Victor’s shoulder.

 “Alpha,” Dr. Stevens walks down the hall wearing a blood-covered white coat. 

 “How is my daughter?” Victor nearly shouts. “Tell me, Scott.”

 “Calm down, Vic,” The doctor huffs, “Corie is stable but not out of the woods. She sustained a lot of damage.”

 Victor stands tall, but I can sense his pain, “Please tell me that my daughter is going to live.”

 “Corie is still critical, but I believe she will live,” Dr. Stevens states. “She is strong.”

 “Of course she is,” Victor sputters.

 “She may be here for weeks,” Dr. Stevens explains.

 “I just want her alive, Scott,” Victor breathes out.

 The doctor pats his shoulder.

 Victor turns to us, “You three can return to the house. You can see your mother and sister in the morning.”

 “Okay,” Tyler nods.

 “Sorry, Dad,” Skylar whispers.

 “Skylar, Tyler, I need you two to take charge in the office tomorrow. You know most of the protocols. Richard and Tony will help you if you need it. I need to stay here and focus on your mother and sister,” Victor explains.

 “Can I help?” I ask.

 Victor looks me up and down, “Yes, you may help,” He grins. “Thank you.”

 “For what?” I shrug. “I’m the reason we were attacked.”

 “It’s not your fault,” Victor shakes his head. “Your power scares them.”

 “I don’t want this power,” I complain. 

 “Come on, Amber,” Tyler wraps his arm around me. “Goodnight, Dad,” He mutters.

 Victor nods and turns to walk down the hall.

 “Tell Mom that we love her,” Skylar mentions.

 We all walk out of the hospital and amble towards the house. My mind is a mess. So much is happening that it’s becoming overwhelming. I just want my normal life back. I don’t want to be queen.

 ‘It’s your destiny,’ Lilith speaks up.

 I say nothing and hug myself.

 “What are you thinking about?” Tyler asks.

 “Life,” I mumble.

 We get to our room, and I notice it’s been cleaned. My clothes are no longer piled up on the ottoman. They are now hung up in the closet, along with Tyler and Skylar’s clothes.

 “Mom asked the omegas to move our stuff in here,” Tyler states. “I guess they cleaned your mess too.”

 “I guess,” I sigh and flop on the couch. 

 “Perhaps we should order some food,” Tyler sits beside me.

 I lie in his lap while Skylar sits on the other end.

 “What do you want?” Tyler wonders.

 I ponder for a second, “Pizza.”

 “That sounds good,” Tyler agrees. “What about you, Sky?”

 “Whatever,” Skylar responds with a curt shrug.

 Tyler stands and walks over toward the bed. He picks up his phone.

 I sit up and look at the TV. It’s currently off.

 “You are just going to avoid looking at me now?” Skylar snorts. “You wear my mark but won’t say three simple words.”

 “Skylar,” I huff and stand up. “Just drop it, okay,” I grumble and move away from him.

 “I can’t drop it,” Skylar grabs my arm and pulls me toward him. “Say it, Amber. If you feel it, say the words.”

 “Skylar,” I try to get out of his grip.

 “Skylar,” Tyler complains. “Let her go.”

 “Not until she says it,” Skylar looks deep into my eyes. 

 I look at the ground as tears well up in my eyes. I am overwhelmed by the emotions I am feeling. “Skylar,” I sniffle.

 He lets me go, “Fine, then don’t say it.”

 “Skylar,” I cry. I look between the twins. Their blue eyes sparkle as we stare at each other. My heart swells, and I know I need to say what I feel. “I- “I trail off as my lips tremble. “I- “

 “She’s not going to say it,” Skylar shakes his head and turns away from me. “Savannah said it.”

 “Sky,” Tyler drawls.

 ‘Say it,’ Lilith urges me. ‘I will give you the strength if you need it.’

 ‘No,’ I protest. “I love you,” I nearly whisper, and Skylar turns to me. 

 “What?” He speaks.

 “I love you,” I say louder. “I love you, Skylar Brooks,” I state, and he smashes his lips against mine.
