I Need A Shower

Amber



 “I’ll be right down,” I mutter to Victor.

 Victor bows his head slightly, “Be downstairs in ten,” He orders and hurries out of the room.

 The twins are silent as we all get dressed. I know they aren’t happy after what I said about having pups. I can sense their emotions now. Their wolves keep trying to speak with me, but I ignore them. Lilith is lingering in the shadows of my mind. I know she will have a lot to say about the pup situation.

 I move to the door and walk out. The twins follow me in silence. I feel guilty for what I said, but I had to say it. 

 “You don’t seem nervous about meeting Councilman Cleary,” Tyler breaks the silence.

 “Ed?” I shrug. “I have known Edmund Cleary my entire life,” I tell him. “He and my grandfather are good friends.”

 “Of course,” Skylar huffs.

 “You guys have met him?” I say, trying to make conversation. 

 “Well, yeah,” Tyler nods. “We started going to meetings with our dad when we were thirteen.”

 “Sounds right. My cousin Deacon went with my uncle about that age,” I mention.

 We step onto the elevator, and I stand between them. I whistle nervously while trying to ignore their persistent wolves.

 “Why don’t you want pups?” Skylar blurts out. “Do you not like them?”

 “I love pups. I have a lot of nieces and nephews. I love playing with them, but-” I pause. “I just never saw myself as a mother.”

 “You would be a great mother,” Tyler counters.

 The elevator stops before I can respond. I see Councilman Cleary standing down the hall with his mate Delores. He turns to me and grins. He is a large man with balding hair and brown eyes. He has a massive scar on the left side of his face from a fight with a werecat. I remember him telling my siblings and I that story over and over.

 “Uncle Ed,” I squeal and trot towards him. 

 “Amber Payne,” Edmund shakes his head.

 I throw my arms around him and take in his usual scent of cigars and brandy. I release him and turn to Delores. “Auntie Delores,” I hug her.

 “Causing trouble again, Amber?” Delores snickers. She is a thin woman with long white hair and hazel eyes. 

 I shrug, “I don’t know,” I look at Edmund. 

 “Why don’t we go to the office,” Victor gestures. 

 We all move down the hall to the alpha’s office. We file in, and I sit on a couch in between the twins. Tyler places his hand on my knee, and I smile at him. I glance at Skylar, and he is looking away from me. 

 Delores sits on the opposite couch with Sheila. She gives me a knowing smile, and I blush slightly. “I should have known you would land twin mates,” She laughs.

 Edmund stands next to Victor. He is wearing a polo shirt and slacks; usually, he is dressed formally. “I was in town at the club when I got the call,” He notices me observing his outfit.

 “Was my grandpa there?” I wonder.

 “Of course,” Edmund snorts. “Old Norman was spinning his usual bull.”

 I laugh and then sigh, seeing his face turn from jovial to deadly serious. 

 “You know why I am here, Amber,” Edmund’s tone turns serious. “Killing an alpha is a grave charge.”

 I shudder and look at my hands. The twins both lean into me, and I feel comforted by them. 

 “She was defending our father,” Tyler complains.

 Edmund holds his hands up, “I realize that, young Brooks.”

 “Tyler,” Victor growls lowly.

 “Victor told me part of what happened,” Edmund looks down at me. “I need to hear it from you, Amber.”

 “Will she be punished?” Skylar asks, and I hear the worry in his voice.

 “That’s up to the Council,” Edmund sighs. “I can only take preliminary statements. But you must come to Silver Moon Manor to testify before the Council.”

 I gulp, “Shit.” I look at Edmund, “I was just defending Victor. I saw him on the ground, and Alpha Timmons was ready to kill, so I acted on instinct. Lilith was mostly in charge. It happened so fast. One second, I was running, and the next I,” I pause, “Well, Lilith had Alpha Timmons\s throat in her jaws.”

 “Timmons attacked us,” Tyler adds.

 “He came to our border looking for a fight,” Skylar chimes in.

 “I don’t doubt that,” Edmund nods, “Amber?”

 “I was in the house when the attack began,” I say.

 “Really?”

 “Victor had told me to remain in the house when Alpha Timmons arrived,” I explain as the twins both give me alarmed looks. 

 “Amber,” Tyler hisses through gritted teeth.

 ‘I can’t lie to him,’ I mind link my mate.

 Edmund looks at Victor, “Did you order her to stay?”

 “Well, it wasn’t a direct order,” Victor shrugs.

 “Was it an order or a request?” Edmund clears his throat.

 Victor takes a deep breath, “It was more of a suggestion. Alpha Timmons had been the one who paid my warrior to kidnap Amber. So, I wanted her to stay in the house for her safety,” He explains.

 “So, Amber, why did you leave the house?” Edmund asks me, and I start to tremble.

 “Lilith insisted that my mates were in danger,” I explain. “I tried to resist but- “

 “You acted on instinct,” Edmund interrupts. “Okay,” He clasps his hands as he ponders. “You acted like a Luna should?” 

 I nod, “I will be the Luna of this pack eventually.”

 “And so much more,” Edmund smirks. “If only I had known that I was looking at the future kings of our species when I caught those two swimming in the pond at the Manor,” He laughs and looks at the twins.

 “Oh, yes,” Victor snorts.

 “Pond?” I ask and look between Skylar and Tyler.

 “The first time I took them to the Manor, they decided to escape me and go swimming in the koi pond in front,” Victor explains.

 “Oh, all of the Luna just looked at me like I was raising savages,” Sheila adds and gives her sons a look.

 I burst out laughing, “Really?”

 My mates shrug, “It was Skylar’s idea,” Tyler folds his arms.

 “There was a cool turtle I wanted,” Skylar mumbles.

 “Did you get the turtle?” I ask.

 “No,” Skylar shakes his head, and we all laugh.

 “Wait,” I shudder. “You know about my family being royal?”

 Edmund nods, “Yes. As head of the Council, there are some secrets I am privy to. Also, your grandmother and I dated briefly before I met Delores,” he says, and my eyes widen.

 I look at Delores, and she nods.

 “I don’t hold it against Phyllis,” Delores laughs. “Half of the alpha males wanted to date her.”

 “She told you about the royal thing?” I wonder.

 “Yes, but as a young man, I didn’t take her seriously until I saw her wolf,” Edmund explains. “Her father was very protective of her and swore me to secrecy, and Edgar Hunt was not one to cross,” I hear some fear in Edmund’s voice which I find surprising.

 “You were scared?”

 “Damn right, I was,” Edmund chuckles. “Anyways, after your mother’s wolf was revealed to be like Phyllis’s, we thought Catherine would be the fated one.”

 I gulp.

 “We had to protect her.”

 “Were there others after her?” I ask.

 “Yes. Your kind is highly sought after,” Edmund looks me dead on. “Your royal blood makes you a target. Not only from the ones resistant to the return of the royals but to those who want you as a trophy.”

 “Trophy?” I shiver.

 “Yes, there are hunters who seek to collect rare supernaturals and will pay anything to have them. Vampires and witches want your blood as it’s a powerful ingredient for potions,” he explains, and tears well up in my eyes. Edmund takes a deep breath. “I hate to scare you, Amber. But that’s the reality of the situation.”

 “My mother died to protect me,” I sniffle.

 “They were after both of you,” he says.

 “Grandma said it was just me,” I shake my head.

 “There is contention there,” Edmund admits. “Some think your mother was the target. Your grandfather thinks you were the target. And others like me think you were both the target.” 

 “Why did I have to be born a freak?” I cry. “Why couldn’t I be normal like my brother and sister?”

 “You are not a freak, Amber,” Edmund leans toward me. “You are the one to save us all.”

 “I just wanted to be a warrior.”

 “You are still a warrior, Amber,” Edmund explains. “Your drive to fight for others is the queen within trying to break out. You were not meant for ordinary.”

 I wipe a tear from my cheek.

 “Anyway, you should have Phyllis call Dawna Milford,” he tells me.

 “Who?” I shrug.

 “Dawna is a great aunt of yours. She isn’t from the Hunt line, but she is the family historian and a witch,” He explains.

 I shudder, “I don’t like witches.”

 “But you are okay with vampires,” Skylar scoffs.

 “Witches are too tricky for me. You usually know where you stand with a vampire,” I mention.

 “Dawna will help explain things to you and the twins better,” Edmund explains. He straightens up. “Anyways, I have all I need from you, Amber. Someone will let you know when the trial starts.”

 “I have to go to trial?” I frown.

 “I’m sorry, sweetie,” Edmund sighs. “I must follow the laws. But I am confident that you won’t be punished. You acted on instinct to protect your alpha against an aggressor.”

 “He isn’t my alpha yet,” I argue.

 Edmund looks at Victor.

 “We haven’t made her official yet,” Victor breathes out. “But I consider her a full member of my pack.”

 “Well, the marks on her neck should be enough,” Edmund points out.

 “They just marked me tonight,” I say.

 “Amber,” Tyler hisses.

 “Shh,” Skylar counters.

 Edmund pinches the bridge of his nose, “Honey, we are trying to help you.”

 “She was protecting the father of her mates, “Delores joins in. “She doesn’t have to be an official member of this pack or marked for that to stand.”

 “Yes, Delores,” Edmund smiles at his mate. He looks at the twins. “It pays to have a highly intelligent woman as your mate.”

 Delores blushes, “I do alright.”

 “Dear, you have a Ph.D.,” Edmund laughs. “She is humble too.” He claps his hands, “I have to go now.”

 We all stand up and walk Edmund and Delores out of the house. There is a white limo waiting in the front. 

 “Have a safe trip, Ed,” Victor shakes his hand.

 Delores puts an arm around me, “It amazes me how much you resemble Catherine,” she grins. “You are so much like her.”

 “I hear that a lot,” I sigh.

 “She would be proud of you,” Delores squeezes me.

 “I hope,” I shrug.

 Delores releases me, and Edmund gives me a bear hug, “You behave yourself, kiddo.”

 “I’ll try, Uncle Ed.”

 He laughs and lets me go. “Don’t worry about the trial. I am confident that you will be exonerated.”

 I nod and watch him slide into the limo beside Delores. I wave as they pull away. “I’m tired,” I mention and turn to walk back into the house. I don’t even bother to see if the twins are following me, Lilith whimpers in my head. 

 “Amber,” Sheila calls to me as I enter the house. “Amber, sweetie,” She grabs my arm.

 “What?” I spin around to face her.

 “You are hanging out with me tomorrow. I need to teach you some things,” she mentions. “The twins will be with Victor all day.”

 “Oh,” I sigh. “I was going to do some training- “

 “You heard the doctor. You still have to wait a few more days before you can return to training,” she says.

 I scoff.

 “It will be fun, trust me,” Sheila laughs. “Besides, I want to talk to you about something important.”

 “What?” I wonder.

 “I want to know why you don’t want to give me grandpups,” She mentions, and I narrow my eyes. 

 “Goodnight, Sheila,” I mutter and storm away from her.

 “See you in the morning, Amber,” She calls behind me.

 I shake my head and run up the stairs instead of using the elevator. I run to the room and shut the door. I lean against it for a second before moving into the bathroom. I take another shower and put on a light nightgown that barely covers me. 

 The twins are lying on the bed waiting for me when I emerge from the bathroom. Tyler is wearing shorts while Skylar is completely naked and stroking himself. 

 “I just want to sleep,” I say, turning toward the couch.

 “We understand,” Tyler mentions. “We will talk tomorrow.”

 I take a deep breath.

 “Are you that mad that you don’t want to sleep with us?” Skylar speaks up. “We have things to work out, but that’s no reason to go down the path of rejection again.”

 I sigh and trudge over to the bed, and crawl in between them. My body relaxes as both begin to touch me. I gasp from the tingles. “I’m sorry,” I breathe out.

 “Don’t be sorry,” Tyler says and kisses me. “I love you.”

 “I love you,” Skylar says as he kisses me.

 I settle in between them, “Goodnight.”

 ‘You didn’t say I love you to them,’ Lilith says.

 I say nothing to her as I let myself drift off to sleep.
