 I don’t know why I lingered to look at Amber. Part of me wanted to know what made her wake up screaming and crying last night. I had been in bed with her and Tyler. Amber didn’t notice I was there as she was focused on Tyler. I sat in the dark while she cried into his arms. I felt jealousy and concern. 

 ‘Because you care about her,’ Pollux speaks up.

 I was angry last night. First, Savannah didn’t want to have sex after Tyler, and I passed out. We both felt the pain of Amber kissing Cal Walker. It caused us to pass out, and Savannah went and told our parents.

 “Are you sure Amber is with Cal Walker?” Dad asked.

 “Yeah,” I shout at him. “Who else would she be with?”

 Dad shrugs, “I just told Cole to check on them and send Amber home.”

 “Are you sure you don’t want Dr. Whitehead to come check on you?” Mom asked us.

 “We are fine, Mom,” Tyler assured her. 

 After my parents left, Savannah started picking up her belongings. “Where are you going?” I asked her. 

 “I can’t do this, Skylar,” She responded. 

 I grabbed her arm a little too harshly.

 “Maybe another time,” Savannah sighed and kissed my cheek before leaving my room.

 Then after Savannah left, I stood in the hallway with Tyler to see Amber sauntering toward her room. Of course, she had to go and kick me in the nuts again. I don’t think I deserved it. My nuts still hurt this morning. 

 I had gone to bed and wound up tossing and turning, unable to get comfortable. I sensed Amber’s sadness as Pollux urged me to go comfort her. I just growled and buried my face in the pillows. I eventually got up and went to her room to find Tyler holding her. She was fast asleep and looked so content.

 I stared at her while Tyler opened his eyes.

 “She was crying, so I came to comfort her,” He explains.

 I say nothing and stand there until Amber stirs. I hid while she argued with Tyler. Then when she was asleep again, I reluctantly got into bed with them and fell asleep. Her screams woke me up later. My heart ached as she cried into Tyler’s arms.

 ‘Why was she screaming?’ I say to myself.

 ‘Why don’t you ask her?’ Pollux responds.

 ‘You saw what happened,’ I snark. ‘She isn’t going to tell me.’

 ‘Why do you care?’ Pollux asks.

 “Skylar,” Dad yells at me as I almost collide with him.

 We are in front of the packhouse. Several SUVs are waiting as we head to the Dark Knights Pack. It’s a small pack that we are signing a treaty with today. 

 “Sorry,” I mumble to him.

 He pats my shoulder, “I need you to pay attention today, son.”

 I nod and get into the SUV. Tyler slides in beside me, and Dad gets into the front seat. My twin glances at me.

 “What?” I mumble.

 “I don’t know why she was crying either,” He mentions.

 “I don’t know what you are talking about,” I shrug.

 Tyler snorts, “You and Amber have a lot more in common than you will admit to.”

 “I do not have anything in common with that whore,” I say too loud, causing my father to look back at me.

 “Amber is not a whore, Skylar,” Tyler argues.

 “She went to Cal’s house,” I point out.

 “And we were making out with Savannah,” Tyler yells back.

 I slug his shoulder, “She shouldn’t have gone to his house.”

 “Boys,” Dad growls.

 I fold my arms and huff.

 “Why is it okay for us but not her?” Tyler asks. “I mean, I don’t like that she went to Cal’s house yesterday either.”

 Dad turns to the front and leans over to speak with the warrior driving the vehicle. We pull away from the house, and I look out the window. The Dark Knights Pack isn’t far, so driving there will only take an hour.

 We pass by Amber on the way out of the territory. She is walking towards the training facility. My brother and I both stare at her. She waves, and I can’t help but smile even though it was directed at Tyler.

 “So, what are we doing tonight when we get home?” I ask my twin.

 He rolls his eyes, “Well, I am going to hang out with Amber.”

 “In her room?” I wonder.

 “Yeah,” Tyler responds. “Why?”

 I shrug,” No reason.”

 Tyler chuckles.

 “What?”

 “Nothing,” Tyler shakes his head.

 “What?” I repeat with a growl.

 “Knock it off, Skylar,” Dad turns to me. “I need you both to focus today. This treaty is important.”

 “Sorry, Dad,” Tyler mutters.

 I pull my phone from my pocket and start fiddling with it. I send some messages to Savannah and find out that she is going to hang out with Corie and a few others this afternoon.

 -I am hanging out with Corie, Matilda, and Amber- She texts me.

 -Amber?- I ask with angry emojis.

 -Yes- She responds.

 “Since when did Savannah become friends?” I say out loud.

 Tyler glances at me, “I don’t know. But why can’t they be friends?”

 “You know why, Tyler,” I nearly yell.

 “No, I don’t know why, Sky,” He counters.

 -I don’t like you hanging out with Amber- I text Savannah

 -Too bad. I like her- She responds. -You don’t get to tell me who to hang out with-

 I growl as I throw my phone against my Dad’s seat. “Bitch.”

 “Skylar,” Dad drawls.

 ‘What’s wrong?’ Tyler mind links me.

 ‘I don’t want Savannah hanging out with Amber,’ I tell him.

 Tyler shrugs, ‘I don’t see the problem. Why shouldn’t they be friendly toward each other?’

 “Shut up,” I snarl.

 We approach a gated community that is surrounded by forested hills. There is no gate, just a guard shack beside the road. An older man steps out of the hut as we pull up.

 “Alpha Brooks?” The man asks as Dad leans over.

 “Yes, and my Beta and warriors in the other cars,” Dad responds.

 The guard slaps the top of the SUV, “Go on in. Alpha Timmons is waiting for you.”

 “Thanks,” Dad nods.

 We drive through the territory, and all of the houses look rundown. Most of them are little more than trailer houses.

 “This place smells,” I mutter.

 “It does,” Tyler shudders. “And what’s with the trailer houses?”

 “Not all packs are rich like us, son,” Dad replies.

 We pull up to an opulent house. It’s bigger and fancier than ours. It looks out of place among the trailer parks. 

 A well-dressed overweight man stands in front of the house with a beautiful woman wearing a tight dress on his arm. The man is smoking a large cigar as we pull up.

 Two omegas wearing thin and holey clothes rush forward to open the doors.

 Dad is the first one to approach the man, “Alpha Keith Timmons,” He greets him.

 “Ah, Victor Brooks, it’s about time we met,” Alpha Timmons says as smoke rises from his nose. “This is my mate and Luna, Anita,” He introduces the woman.

 Dad nods, “These are my sons, Skylar and Tyler.”

 “This is my son, Zachary,” Alpha Timmons shoves a younger man forward. “And my beta and brother, Jason,” He indicates another man a few feet away. 

 Jason is a lot thinner and younger than his brother. 

 “My beta,” Dad points, “Richard Grant and his son Ethan.”

 “My son, Oliver,” Jason points to a younger version of himself.

 Oliver is giving us all strange looks, especially Tyler and me. “Why do you guys smell like apple pie?”

 Tyler laughs and looks at me, “I like pie,” My impertinent twin responds with a laugh. “But I haven’t had any today.”

 Oliver sniffs the air as his eyes glow strangely, “You have my mate!”

 We all look at each other.

 Oliver tries lunging at Dad, but Beta Jason restrains him. “Calm down, Oliver,” Beta Jason growls.

 “Why don’t we go on inside,” Alpha Keith gestures to the house. “Jason, get control of your son.”

 “I’m trying, Keith,” Jason hisses.

 Oliver roars as we start filing into the house. “I want my mate!”

 “That was weird,” Dad mutters to Richard.

 “Apple pie?” Richard mumbles. “You don’t think that Savannah is his mate?” Richard asks Dad.

 “She is our mate!” I roar.

 Everyone stops to stare at me.

 “Skylar,” Dad gives me a stern direct look. “Behave,” He juts his index finger in my face.

 We continue walking down a marble-floored hall with expensive tapestries. “My beautiful Luna loves her tapestries,” Alpha Timmons laughs. “That one,” He points to a large one with a bunch of naked people and horses on it. “Cost half a million dollars. Some famous guy made it a hundred years ago.”

 “It was Joel Smead, dear,” Luna Anita speaks up. “And it was made in the 1800s.”

 “Whatever,” The alpha chuckles. “Women, right?” He nudges Dad.

 “Right,” Dad responds.

 Alpha Timmons leads us into a large, round room with a big table. “That table is made of Brazilian Rosewood,” He seems to be bragging. “Cost us close to fifty thousand dollars.”

 We all sit around the table, and a few minutes later, Beta Jason walks in with Oliver and another younger male. “This is my younger son Steve,” Jason explains. 

 Steve sits beside Oliver, who is glaring at us.

 “Shall we get started on the treaty,” Dad asks.

 Alpha Timmons nods, “My gamma, Trace, should be here shortly with the paperwork. Now, the terms are the same, right?”

 “They should be,” Dad nods.

 “You know I heard you just allied with Shadow Winds,” Alpha Timmons puffs on his cigar. 

 “Right,” Dad nods. “I don’t see what that has to do with us.”

 “You know I am not a fan of Alpha Martin,” Timmons rocks in his chair.

 Dad shrugs, “I didn’t know that.”

 “Yeah, Alpha Martin thinks he is some sort of king because he has that Squad. I asked them for help, and they wanted me to pay, “Alpha Timmons snorts, and smoke comes out of his nose. “Are you guys thirsty?”

 “I could use something to drink,” Dad responds and gives Richard a look.

 “I thought you had the omegas set out refreshments, Anita,” Keith growls at his Luna. “Where are the refreshments?”

 “I’m sorry, Keith,” Anita hops up. “I’ll go check.”

 “Hurry up,” He says and slaps her ass hard.

 Anita hurries out of the room while a thin red-headed man scrambles and places papers in front of the alpha.

 “Is that everything, Trace?” He asks.

 “Yes, sir,” Trace nods.

 “This is my Gamma, Trace Potter.”

 “Hi,” Trace waves and goes to sit beside Jason.

 Alpha Timmons hums as he looks at the papers.

 Richard pulls out some papers from a bag and hands them to Dad.

 “That was weird,” Ethan leans over to us. “That other guy thinks we have his mate,” He whispers.

 “I can hear you,” Oliver snarls. “I want my mate.”

 “Dude, we don’t have your fucking mate,” I snarl back.

 “Skylar,” Dad growls at me.

 Luna Anita returns with a few omegas in tow. They have a rolling food cart with some coffee pots and other refreshments. The omega all look gaunt and like they haven’t been fed in a while. One of them has cuts and bruises on her face.

 Alpha Timmons seems to have caught me looking, “We are strict here. Omegas step out of line, and they are disciplined.”

 “Is starvation a punishment?” I ask.

 “Skylar,” Dad hisses.

 “What? Both of them look emaciated, Dad,” I point out.

 “They get plenty to eat,” Alpha Timmons snorts. “I don’t need to be lectured by pups.”

 “Right you are, Keith,” Dad says as one of the omegas sets a steaming cup of coffee in front of him.

 After refreshments, the omegas and Luna Anita are ushered out of the room. 

 “There are some things women shouldn’t be involved with,” Alpha Timmons chuckles.

 I zone out as I watch Keith and Dad go back and forth negotiating. It takes a few hours of back and forth arguing before they agree to sign the papers.

 “I am not going to sever my alliance with Alpha Martin,” Dad argues. 

 “Fine,” Alpha Timmons snarls. “Just don’t invite us to the same parties.”

 “If that’s all,” Dad laughs dryly. 

 “Speaking of parties,” Alpha Timmons nods at Oliver. “Could we perhaps come one day and see if my nephew finds his mate in your pack.”

 “Do you think his mate is at our pack?” Dad responds.

 “Oliver seems to think so,” Beta Jason adds.

 “I want my mate,” Oliver grumbles.

 “We are working on that, son,” Jason squeezes Oliver’s shoulder.

 “Sure, we can work that out,” Dad responds.

 ‘It better not be Savannah,’ I think to myself.

 ‘She is not your mate,’ Pollux grumbles.

 “Well, the papers are signed,” Alpha Timmons and Dad stand up and shake hands. “Anita assures me that the omegas put together a lovely lunch for us.”

 “That would be lovely,” Dad nods. 

 We all stand up and file out of the room. Oliver bumps into us.

 “What’s your problem?” I growl at him.

 “When I go to your pack, you better hand over my mate,” He snarls.

 “Dude, we aren’t going to keep your mate from you,” Tyler scoffs. 

 I shudder as I suspect his mate might be Savannah, and I am not handing her over. 

 “You better not,” Oliver snarls. “Or you will pay.”

 “Dude,” Tyler laughs. “You need to chill.”

 Oliver pushes my twin, and I go into protection mode and slug him. Oliver stumbles back. He wipes blood from his nose and lunges at me with a growl.

 “Boy!” Dad yells.

 “Oliver!” Beta Jason shouts.

 We all freeze. Jason grabs his son and drags him away while our father gives us a look.

 “Sorry, Dad,” Tyler apologizes.

 “What did I say about behaving?” Dad juts his finger in our faces again.

 “Boys,” Alpha Timmons laughs, and we enter a large dining room.

 It’s not set up for the pack to eat in. Just a long table with a few people. I assume to be ranked members.

 “Where does the pack eat?” Dad asks.

 “Ranked pack members don’t eat with lower pack members,” Alpha Timmons responds as we sit.

 Omegas dressed in tuxes enter the room with silver trays. We are served caviar and other expensive foods for lunch. We eat well at home but also ensure everyone in the pack is well-fed.

 Dad chats with Alpha Timmons while we eat. I become more disgusted by this pack as the meeting goes on. 

 “I don’t think I want to be aligned with them when we become Alphas,” I whisper to my brother.

 “I hear you, Sky,” Tyler nods.

 

 After lunch, we say our goodbyes and head back to the SUVs. I notice that the warriors aren’t dressed much better than the omegas. They also look to be starving. I don’t know how they can function if they aren’t treated right.

 “This place blows,” I say as we get into the SUVs. “How can you want to be aligned with that jackass, Dad?” I ask.

 “Skylar,” Dad says.

 “Seriously, Dad? The omegas don’t even look like they are fed more than once a week,” I point out.

 “Skylar, it’s not my place to tell another alpha how to run his pack,” Dad sighs.

 “But you see it, right? Alpha Timmons lives in a big house, and his pack is suffering,” I snarl as we drive away.

 “I need you not to cause problems with him, Skylar,” Dad tells me. “They are coming to our pack on Friday.”

 “Dad,” I shout. 

 “Sometimes we have to make alliances and treaties with alphas that aren’t great,” Dad explains.

 I shake my head. I am now worried that Savannah will be Oliver’s mate and be taken from us. I know Tyler won’t care, but I do.
