Not the Enemy

Amber

 

 "Amber," Cal' worried voice echoed in my head. "Oh my god, Amber," His voice becomes desperate.

 I open my eyes, and I am lying on the couch as Cal hovers over me. My chest and head hurt. I take a deep breath and sit up. "What happened?" I mutter.

 "You blacked out when we were kissing," Cal responds. His blue eyes are wide and full of worry. 

 I reach out and touch his cheek, "Sorry," I sigh.

 "No," He chuckles and sits beside me, "I’m just happy you are okay.” He leans toward me, and I am prepared to kiss him again.

 “Callen,” Cole’s deep voice interrupts us.

 “Dad,” Cal protests.

 “Amber,” Cole looks at me. “You need to go back to the packhouse.”

 “We were going to watch a movie,” Cal argues.

 Cole glares at his son, “Ms. Payne.”

 I sigh deeply and look at Cal, “I guess I have to go.”

 Cal frowns, “I guess so.” He tries to touch me, but Cole growls. “I’ll see you around.”

 I rise from the couch and step towards Cole.

 “There are a couple of warriors outside that will escort you home,” Cole tells me. “I expect you at the training ground tomorrow morning.”

 I nod, “Yes, sir.” I take one look back at Cal before stepping out of the house. Two warriors I haven’t met are standing on the porch.

 “Cole asked us to take you home,” the taller blond tells me. “I’m Joe, and this is my brother Frank.”

 “I’m Amber,” I say as we walk toward a black SUV. 

 Joe opens the passenger door, and I slide in. Frank gets in the back while Joe gets in the driver’s side. He starts the car, and heavy metal blasts out of the speakers causing me to jump. “Sorry,” Joe chuckles and turns down the music.

 “No, it’s alright. I like this song,” I mention.

 “You like Arch Enemy?” Joe asks with a slight smile.

 “Fuck yeah,” I laugh as the car pulls away from the curb.

 Joe turns the music back up. I look out the window as we head toward the packhouse. It only takes a few minutes to arrive at the packhouse. 

 “Thanks,” I say to Joe as I slide out of the truck.

 “We’ll see you around, Amber,” Joe waves as I close the door.

 I stare at the house for a moment before charging inside. Anger and pain are my dominant emotions as I walk down the hall. I choose to run up the stairs rather than wait for the elevator. The scent of rain and forest hangs in the air as I reach the alpha floor.

 Skylar and Tyler are standing outside of my room as I walk up. Skylar sneers at me.

 “Look, Tyler, the little slut returned,” He snorts.

 “Fuck you,” I screech. 

 “We felt the pains of you kissing that warrior,” Skylar says.

 “So?” I glare at him. “I felt the pains of you fucking Savannah.”

 “We didn’t have sex with her,” Tyler blurts out.

 “So?” I shrug. 

 “I told you to stay away from Cal Walker,” Skylar juts a finger in my face.

 I slap it away, but he steps towards me, and I am again pressed against the wall. I stare into his dark blue eyes. “You don’t own me, Skylar Brooks.”

 He dips his head and inhales, “You are our mate. You do whatever we tell you.”

 “Fuck you!” I spit in his face and knee his testicles.

 He roars in pain and drops to his knees. I walk around him and storm into my room, slamming the door behind me. I lean against it for a moment to catch my breath.

 “That fucking bitch is going to pay!” Skylar roars.

 I listen to his footsteps descend while Tyler lingers outside of the door. “Go away, Tyler. You are not going to fix this,” I mutter. I walk toward the couch, peel off my clothes, and flop on it. I pick up my phone and see a few messages from Kaylee and Regina. I write them back, pretending to be content in my new hell. I drop the phone and stare at the ceiling.

 “What did I do wrong?” I speak out loud. “Why them? What did I do to deserve them?” I ask as tears well up in my eyes.

 ‘You did nothing wrong,’ Lilith speaks up.

 “Then why them? Why me?” I say, throwing myself a pity party as I start to cry. “That goddess hates me.”

 ‘She doesn’t hate you,’ Lilith sighs as I cry myself to sleep.

 My dreams are nothing remarkable, and I wake up and jump when I realize I am in Tyler’s arms on the bed. I try pulling away from him, causing him to wake up.

 “What are you doing?” He mumbles.

 “What are you doing?” I yell at him and struggle to get away.

 He sighs and lets me go. I scramble off the bed, “What makes you think this is okay?”

 Tyler sits up, and he is wearing only a pair of boxers. I look away from his muscular form, “I heard you crying,” He responds. “I felt your sadness, and Castor told me to comfort you.”

 “What?” I scoff and walk towards the couch. 

 “I want us to work, Amber,” He rolls off the bed and grabs my arm.

 I turn and slap him, “Let me go, Tyler.” 

 “Please, for the love of the goddess,” He sighs.

 I stop struggling and look into his blue eyes. They are so much softer than Skylar’s. 

 “The goddess doesn’t hate you,” He says while touching my cheek.

 I pull away from him, “She must,” I shake my head. “I got stuck with you two,” I sneer.

 “I told you before,” Tyler huffs. “I don’t feel the same way that Skylar does. I don’t love Savannah. I want you, Amber. Give me a chance,” Tyler sounds so hopeful.

 “I don’t want you,” I fold my arms.

 Tyler shakes his head, and I swear I see tears in his eyes, “Figures. I find something I want and am not told I want by Skylar and-“ He trails off. “Goodnight, Amber,” He mumbles and walks towards the door.

 My heart hurts for him as I sense his sorrow. “Wait,” I call to him.

 Tyler turns to me with some hope in his eyes.

 “I’m sorry,” I say and look at the bed. “I’m exhausted. We can-“

 Tyler smiles and walks over to the bed a little too eagerly.

 “Sleep, we are just going to sleep,” I sigh.

 “Right,” Tyler grins and crawls into bed.

 I stare at him for a moment before joining him. Tingles spread through my body as he wraps his strong arms around me. Lilith hums happily in my head. I turn my head, and he is staring at me. “What are you staring at?”

 “The most beautiful woman in the world,” He replies.

 I roll my eyes and turn away from him. I snuggle onto the bed and close my eyes. It takes no time for me to fall back to sleep. I have a nightmare about the day rogues ripped apart my mother. I wake up screaming, and Tyler is holding me tight.

 “Shh,” He says softly and strokes my arms. “It’s alright.”

 I turn myself, so I am facing him. I bury my face in his chest as he rocks me.

 “Please don’t cry,” He says repeatedly. 

 I look into his blue eyes and smile, “Thank you.” I whisper.

 Tyler brushes hair from my face, “I’d do anything for you, Amber.” He leans toward me, and I close my eyes, and he places his lips on mine. We hold the kiss for a moment, then I pull away, and he kisses my forehead.

 I close my eyes and fall asleep again. 

 The next morning I woke up and was alone in bed. A light blanket is placed over me, and I look at where Tyler was to see a note. 

 I’m sorry I had to get up early for training. I hope to see you at breakfast. Anyways, have a good day.

 I read the note several times and held it close to my chest.

 ‘Give him a chance,’ Lilith whispers.

 I sigh and roll out of bed. Tyler’s scent still lingers in the room as I go through my routine. I put on my workout clothes and head out of the room. 

 “Amber,” Sheila calls to me. “Oh, Amber.”

 I turn to the Luna. She is walking towards me with Corie in tow. 

 “Good morning.” Sheila greets me.

 “Ew, you smell like Tyler,” Corie cringes.

 “Corie,” Sheila elbows her. “I was hoping you would join us for breakfast.”

 “I am going to training,” I mention.

 “That can wait. We want you to join us for breakfast, “She pushes.

 “Okay, just something light. I don’t like to eat heavily before training,” I tell her.

 “Oh, I understand, sweetie. I did my fair share of training,” Sheila pats my arm and wrinkles her nose. “You really do smell like my son.”

 I feel myself blush, “We just slept.”

 Sheila laughs, “Oh, honey, you are his mate.”

 I shudder as we walk down the hall to the elevator. We step into the machine and ride in silence. Sheila hums while Corie looks at her phone.

 “Hey, Amber, do you want to hang out later?” Corie asks.

 “I am training today,” I respond.

 “Not all day,” Corie laughs.

 “Sure, maybe,” I shrug.

 “Do you mind if Savannah joins us?” Corie asks.

 “Sure, I like Savannah,” I reply.

 Sheila and Corie both give me a funny look as the doors open. The twins' scent hits me, and I look to see them down the hall with their father.

 They are all dressed in suits. Skylar glares at me while Tyler smiles sweetly at me. I smile back at him.

 “Good morning, my girls,” Victor greets Sheila and Corie. He asks, “Are you ready to train my warriors this morning, Amber?”

 “I’m looking forward to it,” I nod.

 “Great,” Victor claps his hands. “I have to go to another pack today with the twins,” He explains. “But, I look forward to hearing about your first day later.” He looks at Sheila. “But first, we have to introduce you to the pack.”

 “I already know a few people,” I mention.

 “And then some,” Skylar hisses.

 “Skylar,” Victor growls.

 Skylar shrugs, “It’s true, Dad.”

 Victor sighs, “Let’s go,” He holds his arm out to Sheila. She takes it, and they start towards the dining hall. They look so elegant together.

 The twins and Corie follow their parents, and I trudge behind them. We enter the dining hall, and I see Cal’s friends sitting together. They wave at me, and I try to approach them, but Sheila grabs my arm.

 “We sit up here, hun,” She directs me to the ranked tables. 

 Tyler pulls a chair out, “Sit here,” He smiles sweetly.

 I smile back as I sit down.

 Tyler sits beside me while Skylar goes to the other side of his father. I look around and see Savannah with her family at the next table. 

 “Good morning, everyone,” Victor shouts, quieting the room. “I’m going to keep this short,” He gestures to me and nods for me to stand up.

 I take a deep breath and do as I am told.

 “This is Amber Payne,” Victor begins. “She comes to us from Shadow Winds,” He announces to murmurs. “She is going to assist us in training for a little bit. Treat her with the same respect that you treat me and the rest of the alpha family.” He pauses. “That is all.” Victor sits down, and conversation resumes. 

 I look for Cal but don’t see him in the room. I get up, head to the buffet and pick up a plate. I get fruit, granola, and cottage cheese with a glass of juice. 

 “That’s all you are eating?” Tyler asks as I sit down.

 “I don't like to eat heavy before training,” I say as I bite into a piece of cantaloupe.

 “Makes sense,” Tyler nods. 

 I glance at him, and he looks hot in his blue suit with his long hair pulled back. “Where are you guys going?”

 “Oh, we are going to the Dark Knights Pack,” He responds. “Dad is going to negotiate a treaty or something.”

 “It’s a treaty,” Skylar mumbles.

 “Yeah, that’s what I said,” Tyler counters.

 Skylar rolls his eyes and glares at me, “Why were you crying last night?”

 I pause while sipping my juice, “Hih? I wasn’t crying.”

 “I mean in bed. You kept crying,” Skylar pushes.

 “I don’t know what you are talking about,” I shrug. 

 Skylar rolls his eyes and looks toward Savannah. She gives me a small smile before making goo-goo eyes at Skylar.

 “Anyways, we should be back later tonight,” Tyler nudges me. “Want to hang out? Watch a movie or something?” 

 “I don’t know,” I mumble.

 “Please?” Tyler says, and I look at him. His eyes are sparkling, making it hard to say no.

 “Fine, I guess.”

 “Come on, boys,” Victor stands up. “We have to get going. Alpha Timmons is hard enough to deal with when we aren’t late.” He leans down and kisses Sheila before heading towards the door.

 “We have to go,” Tyler stands up. He leans down like he is going to kiss me. “Anyways, have a good day,” He pats my shoulder and follows his father.

 Skylar lingers for a moment before following his twin and father.

 I gulp down my juice and stand up. “I have to get going,” I say to Sheila.

 “Okay,” She grins while chewing on a bagel.

 “Don’t forget we are hanging out later,” Corie reminds me.

 “I won’t forget,” I mention and leave the dining hall. A line of SUVs pass me as I walk towards the training facility. I sense Tyler staring at me, and I wave. 

 ‘He’s not so bad,’ Lilith chuckles.

 I say nothing to her and quicken my pace. I reach the grounds, and Cole is waiting for me. I am disappointed when I don’t see Cal with him. A young woman with short brown hair is beside Cole. She looks like Cal.

 “Morning, Amber,” Cole grins. “I will have you and Dani here working with the teenagers.”

 I look at the young woman, “Dani?”

 “Yeah,” She nods. “It’s Danielle, but everyone just calls me Dani.”

 “Cool, you must be Cal’s sister then,” I chuckle.

 “I must,” Dani snorts. 

 “Where is Cal?” I look around.

 “Callen won’t be joining us in the mornings,” Cole says. “He has been reassigned.”

 I sigh and feel a little bad.

 “Get started on your warmups, and then Dani will show you what to do,” Cole instructs me and walks away.

 

 Twenty minutes later, I am in front of a line of young men and women standing at attention like soldiers. They all give me suspicious looks as Dani whistles.

 “Listen up, pups,” She yells. “This here is Amber Payne. She is our new trainer, so you better listen to her, or I’ll kick your asses, am I clear?”

 “YES, TRAINER WALKER!” They all shout.

 Dani turns to me, “They are all yours.”
