Early Morning Training

Skylar

 

 Amber lunges at me, and I am surprised by her speed and strength when she barrels right into me. I am thrown off my feet, and she punches me hard. I try to push her off, but she hits me again. Tyler pulls her off of me, and she kicks me. I spring to my feet and launch a tirade at her.

 She stumbles back when my fist connects with her jaw. That doesn’t seem to deter her as she lunges for me again. Tyler stands on the sideline, watching me exchange blows with our mate. Pollux is in my head, trying to get me to stop. He doesn’t want me to hurt her. 

 She punches me hard on the side of my head, and I see stars. I stumble back as Tyler takes up the fight. I have a hard time not watching her form.

 ‘She is so fierce,’ Pollux remarks.

 I still don't like my wolf, but he isn’t wrong. Amber growls and grunts as she punches Tyler. He seems to be holding back, as I know he is enamored by her. I won’t allow myself to be trapped by the mate bond. Uncle Carlton tried to kill himself when his fated mate left him. 

 Tyler falls to the ground, and I step in. Amber is covered in bruises but doesn’t seem to be slowing down. 

 “You are good,” I say to Amber.

 She shrugs and lunges at me. I block her next blow, and she gets me with her other fist. I let out a pained groan. She swings again, and I grab her wrist. Amber lets out a growl and swings her other arm, and I grab that wrist, too, and look her in the eyes.

 The fierce intensity in her eyes softens momentarily as I lean in, taking in her scent. Tingles spread through my body as I hold onto her wrists. It’s too much as Pollux is urging me to kiss her. I lean in and inches from her lips. 

 She inhales and closes her eyes in anticipation of the kiss. 

 My lips brush against her, and the tingles explode through my body. Then Amber lets out a growl. She knees me in the testicles causing me to let her go, and she punches me hard in the gut causing me to fall to my knees. Pain shoots through my body as I let out a pained whimper.

 “Skylar,” My father steps toward me. “What are you doing? I asked Cole and Cal to evaluate Amber’s abilities.”

 I look up at my father, unable to form any words.

 “We just wanted to spar with our mate, Dad,” Tyler says. 

 Amber is looking at us, and I glare at her, “Bitch,” I mutter.

 “I need you two in the office, so hit the showers and get some breakfast. Meet me in the office in half an hour,” Dad orders us while helping me to my feet.=. 

 I lean on Tyler while still glaring at Amber.

 She seems completely unphased and smirks at me with her arms folded.

 “Amber, continue working with the Walkers, please,” Dad tells her.

 She looks at Cal, who smiles at her causing my blood to boil. 

 I don’t know why it angers me as they walk away. Amber doesn’t even look back at Tyler and me.

 ‘Because she is our mate, not his,’ Pollux hisses.

 “Come on, Sky,” Tyler says and tries to pull me away from the field. “I don’t like it either,” He whispers.

 “Like what?” I shake my head and try to walk even though my nuts still hurt.

 “The way Cal is looking at her,” Tyler says.

 “I don’t give a fuck,” I sputter. “Cal can have her,” I say, even though it pains me.

 It’s a slow, painful walk back to the packhouse, and Dad keeps looking at me with a smile. “Hurts, doesn’t it?” He laughs.

 “Shut up,” I grumble at him.

 “You know your mother nearly tore my nuts off while giving birth to you,” He says while patting my back.

 “Great, Dad.”

 “It hurt like a motherfucker. I thought she had rendered me infertile, but we managed to conceive your sister,” He continues.

 “I don’t need to hear that, Dad,” I snarl.

 He laughs again, “Don’t be late, okay.”

 “Okay, Dad,” Tyler responds, and Dad walks toward his office.

 I start limping toward the elevators and smell a familiar perfume. The door opens, and Savannah walks out with Ethan. She smiles sweetly at me.

 “Good morning, my handsome mates,” She coos and goes to hug me, and I wince. “What happened?” She frowns when she notices the pain on my face. “You have bruises on your face.”

 “Tyler and I sparred pretty hard this morning,” I squeak.

 “Did he kick you in the nuts?” Ethan snorts.

 “No Amb-“

 “Yes,” I interrupt Tyler. 

 “Are you coming to breakfast?” Savannah asks and flutters her eyes. She looks hot in her mini skirt and crop top. 

 “In a few. We have to shower and get dressed first,” I say, leaning down to kiss her. Our lips make contact, and I feel nothing: no sparks or anything. I pull back and pat her shoulder. “See you later.”

 Savannah frowns, “Okay,” She looks at Tyler, and he pecks her cheek. Tears well up in her eyes, “Bye,” She breathes out and walks away from us.

 Tyler and I step onto the elevator and ride it in silence.

 “Why didn’t you want her to know Amber kicked you in the nuts?” Tyler asks as the door opens.

 “I just don’t,” I mutter and stumble towards my room. 

 “She is getting to you, isn’t she?” Tyler asks.

 “Who?” I snort, knowing who he is talking about.

 “You know who I am talking about,” Tyler stops beside Amber’s room. “You slept there too.”

 “I only slept there because of my wolf,” I sneer. “I don’t care about that bitch.”

 “You don’t like Pollux,” Tyler folds his arms. “We aren’t going to be able to deny her existence, Sky.”

 I take a deep breath, “Then she’ll be our side bitch or whatever. But Savannah is our Luna, not her,” I thrust my hand at the door and stomped towards my room.

 “Sure,” Tyler snorts.

 I slam open my door, march into the bathroom, and peel off my workout clothes. My nuts still hurt, and I hiss as I step into the shower. A pained howl falls out of me as the water turns on. My body is covered in bruises and a few cuts. 

 ‘She is as magnificent as her wolf,’ Pollux speaks up.

 “Shut up,” I yell. 

 ‘Did you see how she barely flinched?’ Pollux continues.

 “Shut up,” I growl a little louder as my anger gets the best of me. 

 ‘Remember running in the forest with Lilith?’ Pollux says while wagging his tail.

 “I said shut up!” I scream and punch the wall. Bones crunch in my fist, and the tile cracks. Blood pours out and washes down the drain. I lean my head against the wall and shut my eyes. ‘I don’t want to end up like Uncle Carlton,’ I mumble. ‘I will not let that bitch bring me down with her. Savannah is my mate.’

 ‘Savannah is not your mate,’ Pollux snorts. ‘Your mate is right in front of you. You refuse to accept her.’

 ‘I will never accept her,’ I declare.

 ‘And you will forever be weak,’ Pollux counter. ‘Because I will not give you strength to mate with Savannah.’

 ‘I don’t need you anyways,’ I snort. ‘I wish I didn’t have you in my fucking head.’

 ‘Feeling is mutual,’ Pollux growls and retreats.

 I finish my shower and look at my fist. It has stopped bleeding but is still bruised and swollen. “Fuck,” I grumble as I rush into the closet. I quickly throw on a pair of black slacks and a grey button-up shirt. I comb my hair and head out of my room after grabbing some Poptarts and juice. I am still walking funny as my nuts still hurt.

 “Good morning, Sky,” Corie greets me. “Are you okay? You are walking funny.”

 “Rough training,” I respond.

 “I heard your mate kicked you in the nuts,” Corie laughs. 

 I roll my eyes at her, “That’s not what happened.”

 “That’s not what I heard,” she laughs. “Anyways, I like her.”

 “Like who?” I sneer.

 “Amber,” Corie grins. 

 “Great,” I mumble as we reach the elevators. 

 “I mean, I like Savannah too, but-“

 “But what, Corie?” I snark. “Savannah is my mate. Tyler’s too. Amber is just-“

 “Your actual mate,” Corie raises her eyebrows showing off her light blue eyes. 

 “Shut up, Corie. You don’t know what you are talking about,” I scoff.

 “I know what I am talking about, Skylar,” She sticks her tongue out at me. “I turn seventeen in a few weeks, and Melody is ready to find our mate,” She mentions her wolf. “And I can’t wait to meet him.”

 I roll my eyes at her, “Well, I met my mate years ago. I don’t need the one that the moon bitch assigned to me.”

 The door opens on the bottom floor, and Tyler stands in the hall talking to Ethan. He is dressed in khaki pants and a white polo shirt. 

 “Hey, Sky,” Ethan nods at me. “I see your nuts are feeling better.”

 “Fuck you,” I spat at him.

 “Corie,” One of my sister’s friends shouts from down the hall.

 “See you later, Sky,” My sister punches my arm and smirks at Tyler before skipping down the hall toward her friend.

 “I heard your mate cracked your nuts right as you kissed her,” Ethan continues. 

 “I don’t want to talk about it,” I grumble.

 “I would have paid to see that,” Ethan laughs. “I mean, I heard she was quite the spitfire training with Cal Walker.”

 I let out a growl at the thought of her sparring with Cal. 

 “Anyways, are you coming to breakfast?” Ethan asks.

 “No,” I respond and head toward my father’s office. 

 Dad is on the phone when I enter the office, while Beta Richard is sitting in the chair in front of the desk.

 Richard grins at me, “How are the nuts?”

 “God, will everyone shut the fuck up about that!” I shout.

 “Skylar,” Dad barks. “I’m on the phone,” He hisses.

 I fold my arms and sit on the couch. I open my pop tarts and eat them in two bites. I stare at the wall while chewing on them. 

 “Skylar,” Dad calls me, and I turn to him. 

 I wince as I stand up. Dad and Richard both laugh, making me angry. “Yeah, I know.”

 Dad sets a stack of papers on the desk, “I need you to go over these.”

 “Dad,” I whine. “That’s a lot of shit.”

 “Yeah, I know,” He laughs. “Being alpha is a lot of shit, Skylar.”

 I huff and grab the papers. “This sucks.” I sit back down on the couch as Tyler slinks in with Ethan. I glance at my twin, and he looks pissed.

 “What’s up, Tyler?” Richard asks him.

 Tyler shakes his head, “Nothing.”

 Dad sets some more papers on the desk, “Just for you, my son,” Dad smiles at him.

 Tyler sighs, “Geez, Dad.” My twin grabs the papers and sits in a huff beside me.

 “Come on, Ethan,” Richard says to his son. “We have a lot of fun to do today.”

 Ethan huffs, “Great.”

 Music plays in the background as I review the papers and make corrections. Tyler huffs and puffs beside me.

 I give him a side-eyed glance, “What is your problem?”

 “Amber was being all friendly with Cal,” He mutters. “She was laughing and shit like that.”

 “So?” I shrug.

 “Right, like it doesn’t affect you too,” He snorts.

 “Why should I affect me?”

 “Oh my god, Skylar. Are you that fucking stupid?” He nearly yells.

 “Tyler!” Dad barks. “Why are you cussing at your brother?”

 “Never mind, Dad,” Tyler looks at his stack of papers.

 We sit and work for an hour or so. My mind is a mess as Pollux keeps flashing images of Amber in my mind. Her running in wolf form. I can’t get over how beautiful her wolf was. I shake my head. ‘No,’ I tell myself. ‘I love Savannah.’

 ‘Keep saying that,’ Pollux grumbles.

 “Hey, Vic,” Gamma Tony walks into the office.

 “What’s up, Tony?” Dad greets him.

 “Oh, lots of things, Vic,” Tony laughs. “I like the new girl. Oscar was in the game room talking to her along with half the warriors.”

 “That’s good,” Dad responds as my blood boils. 

 My mind imagines Amber with a group of males all fawning over her. I glance over at Tyler, who is staring at Tony and Dad.

 “I want her to get along with the warriors. After all, she will be training them,” Dad glances at us. “Shouldn’t you boys be working?”

 I turn my attention to the papers and listen to Dad and Tony talking. My hands begin to shake as Pollux shows me flashes of her laughing and joking with the warriors. With a growl, I drop the papers on the coffee table and storm out of the office.

 “Skylar!” Dad yells.

 Tyler is right behind me as we march toward the game room. Amber’s scent pulls me faster. I hear laughter coming from the room and step in. What I see makes me blind with rage. Cal Walker is standing beside Amber with his arm wrapped around her shoulders. 

 “GET YOUR FUCKING HANDS OFF OUR MATE!” I roar.
