 “Go after her,” Phyllis encourages Skylar and me. 

 Castor pushes me to go after our mate. We are hurt by what she said, but I must find her. I take off running with Skylar right behind me. I look back to see Amber’s dad and uncle behind us as well. 

 I sniff the air, catch the scent, and take off. Castor pushes forward, and I allow him to take control and shift. Skylar has shifted as well. I see that Flynt and Henry are also in wolf form. Henry’s large black wolf stands out against Flynt’s smaller grey one.

 I turn my attention to the trail. Her scent is heavy in the air, and I get a bad feeling. I hear twigs snapping ahead of us and hope that it is Amber. We all stop right at the edge of the territory. Amber’s scent is all around, but she is nowhere to be found.

 ‘Taken,’ A whispered voice echoes in my mind.

 ‘Did you hear that too?’ Skylar asks.

 ‘Yeah,’ I respond.

 ‘She was taken,’ Castor speaks up.

 ‘Someone took her,’ I tell my twin, and we shift back into human form. I look at the ground and see footprints leading out of the territory. Skylar and I nod and walk along the trail. Wild raspberries lead us to a worn-down forest road. There are tire tracks leading down it.

 “Where is Amber?” Her father, Flynt, asks. He and Alpha Henry are now in human form as well.

 I point down the road, “She was taken.”

 Flynt gulps, and his eyes widen. 

 “Son of a bitch,” Henry curses. "Did you leave any of the rogues that attacked you two and Amber alive?”

 “Yeah,” I nod. “Though Amber took most of them down.”

 “That’s my girl,” Flynt laughs.

 “Anyways, Dad, Beta Richard, and Gamma Tony all interrogated them,” I explain.

 “And?” Henry inquires. “Did they get anything from them?”

 I shrug.

 “The rogues aren’t talking,” Skylar interjects. 

 ‘Castor,’ Lilith’s voice echoes, and I look at Skylar.

 ‘Did you hear Lilith?’ Skylar asks, and I nod.

 I look down the road and get a sense that I know where Amber is. Without hesitation, I take off running again and shift. Skylar runs beside me. We don’t look back to see if the others are following. I just let Castor carry us to our mate.

 We run about a mile from the border and find ourselves on the perimeter of a rundown cabin. A van is sitting in the driveway, and the scent of wild raspberries is strong. I shift back to human form and approach the cabin.

 I hear a loud growling noise and a commotion coming from inside. 

 “Amber,” I yell and run toward the cabin. Skylar is right behind me. We get to a door as it is kicked open. Through a plume of dust, Amber staggers out. She is bloodied and bruised.

 She looks at me, “He’s in there,” She mutters before collapsing in my arms.

 “You found her,” Flynt exclaims as he and Henry join us.

 I have Amber cradled in my arms, “I have to get her to the hospital again.”

 “You son of a bitch,” I hear Henry yell from inside the cabin. Moments later, he drags a beaten Cal Walker out and drops him on the ground.

 “What the fuck, Cal?” Skylar growls.

 Cal is barely conscious and looks at us, “I’m sorry.”

 “Oh, you are going to be really sorry when we return to Nightstar,” I snarl. 

 Amber moans in my arms, and I notice her stomach wound is bleeding, along with a few other injuries.

 “Shit,” I spy the van. “Are there keys?” I growl at Cal.

 He looks at the ground. Skylar kicks him, “My brother asked you a question. Are there keys to the van?”

 Cal nods and points to the cabin, “In there.”

 Henry and Flynt run into the cabin and return with a set of keys. “Come on,” Henry says. We rush over to the van. It’s one of those white windowless types that people associate with kidnappers. 

 Flynt has Cal by the collar of his shirt and tosses him in the back, “Make one move, and I will sever your dick,” He hisses.

 I sit on the floor with Amber in my arms while Henry fires up the van and peels out down the driveway.

 “What’s the fastest way back to your territory?” He asks.

 “I’ll show you,” Skylar hops into the front seat. He looks back at Amber and touches her arm.

 I know deep down my brother cares about her. I know she cares too. It pains me that the two of them are making things so complicated. I want to show my mate how I feel about her. It hurt when she said that we don’t matter to her. Even Skylar’s face registered hurt when she said that. 

 I stroke her forehead, and she smiles. “I love you.”

 Flynt makes a noise. He is sitting next to Cal. “I’m sorry she said that earlier,” He mentions.

 “I love her, Flynt. I just want her to love me back,” I sniffle.

 “Don’t give up, Tyler,” Flynt smiles. “Amber is stubborn and strong-willed. She is a lot like her mother.”

 “I don’t mind having a stubborn mate,” I look at her. 

 The road is bumpy, and we get jostled around. It takes a lot of strength to hold Amber, so she doesn’t get hurt more. The dirt eventually turns to pavement, and we soon reach one of the back gates.

 The guards almost attack as we drive up. Skylar leans over, “Let us the fuck in, Leon.”

 “Sorry,” Leon mutters.

 “The hospital is right down this road,” Skylar tells Henry.

 Amber moans in her sleep, and her eyes flutter open. 

 I stroke her cheek, “Hi, beautiful.”

 Her eyes roll in the back of her head as blood bubbles out of her mouth. I feel warmth as I notice the wound seems to have opened again, and blood is pooling around.

 “Hurry!” I yell at Henry. 

 Amber begins to convulse in my arms, and I feel like her life is draining.

 “Hurry, please!” I cry as I start to feel a tight pain in my chest. I notice Skylar cringing as well. 

 “Henry!” Flynt yells.

 The van speeds up, and we stop in front of the hospital. The door flies open, and Dr. Stevens is there with a stretcher. He helps me out of the van, and I place my mate on the gurney. Amber has stopped convulsing but looks very pale, and her life force is weak.

 I run after the doctor and nurses. I look back to see Flynt beating the shit out of Cal. 

 “You found her,” Dad says as we enter the hospital. 

 “Oh god,” Mom yells when she sees I am covered in blood.

 “It was Cal,” Skylar yells as we enter the emergency room.

 Dr. Stevens and the nurses are once again working hard to keep our mate alive. Skylar even has tears in his eyes.

 “She matters to you,” I say to my twin.

 He eyes me but says nothing. “I would be mad if she died,” He finally admits.

 We stand there watching and waiting. Castor howls mournfully in my head. ‘We should all be marked,’ He whimpers. ‘If we were marked- ‘He trails off.

 “Pollux wants me to mark her,” Skylar mentions.

 “Yeah, so does Castor.”

 Nearly an hour goes by before the doctor lets out a relieved sigh. “She’s stable,” He announces. “I don’t know what happened, but somehow the wound reopened and caused more damage. 

She also had some abrasions in other parts of her body.”

 I look past him at Amber. She is covered in blood. Bandages are covering her abdomen, and she looks so pale and lifeless.

 “Now, with you two near, she should heal in a few days,” Dr. Stevens explains. “But- “He pauses. “I don’t normally advocate this, but if you two marked her- “

 “No,” I interrupt her. “We won’t do that to her.”

 The doctor sighs, “If you marked her, then she would be healed tomorrow,” he says. “As I said, I don’t normally advocate marking your mate without consent. But in cases like this-“ He trails off.

 I look at my brother, and he is deep in thought. “But she’ll be okay without us marking her?”

 “Yes,” the doctor nods.

 “Okay,” I say.

 The nurses wheel Amber out of the room, and we follow them. Dad and many others are in the waiting room.

 “How is my daughter?” Flynt pushes toward the doctor.

 “She is stable,” He responds.

 “Oh, thank the goddess,” Flynt sighs as Phyllis touches his shoulder.

 “Cal Walker is locked up,” Dad mentions. “Henry is interrogating him along with Richard and Tony. But the weasel isn’t talking.”

 “Why would he take Amber?” I ask.

 “No idea,” Dad shakes his head. “Poor Cole is hurt and angry that his son did that.”

 “I know Cal had a thing for her,” I mention, “But I wouldn’t think he would take her.” 

 “You boys should go be with her,” Dad says. 

 I nod and start down the hall.

 “I want to see her too,” Flynt speaks up.

 We reach the room, and I hate seeing Amber in such a weak state. She has machines hooked up to her, and it pains me. I sit beside her and take her hand.

 “Here we are once again, darling,” I laugh.

 Flynt walks around the other side, “Hey, sweetie,” He touches Amber’s forehead. “Dad is here. I am not ready for you to join your mother.”

 I shudder at his words.

 “You boys should mark her now,” Phyllis enters the room.

 “What?”

 “Mark her, and she’ll be awake tonight,” Phyllis explains.

 I shake my head, “No, Phyllis. Amber would be angry if we did that.”

 “I know she would,” Phyllis nods in agreement. “She would be seething. But it will accelerate her healing.”

 I look at my twin, “What do you think?”

 “She’s not my mate,” He mutters.

 “Oh, for goddess sake, Skylar!” I yell and get into his face. “Amber is our mate!”

 “No,” Skylar shakes his head.

 “Savannah found her mate. She is going to go live with him. Amber is the one we are fated to. I know you feel something for her. You wouldn’t be standing there if you didn’t. You wouldn’t have ran at my side to look for her,” I rant.

 “That was all Pollux. He made me- “

 “Bullshit!” I interrupt him. “Don’t put it all on your wolf.”

 Skylar and I glare at each other for a moment, “Fine. She is my mate. But- “

 “But what? Should we mark her?” I ask him sincerely.

 Skylar stares at Amber. “No,” He shakes his head. “The doctor said she would heal.”

 “Okay,” I nod. “Sorry, Phyllis, but we aren’t marking her until she lets us.”

 Phyllis smiles and looks at her granddaughter, “I hope you three figure it out soon. I did all I could. Told you all about your destiny. But it is up to you three to see it.”

 “In the meantime, we are going to find out why Cal Walker tried to kidnap her,” I state and sit back down. I touch her hand, and she stirs. 

 Remarkably her eyes flutter open, “Tim-Tim-Timmons,” She mutters.

 “Timmons? “I ask.

 “Timmons,” she whispers.

 “What about Timmons?” I say and stroke her forehead.

 “Alpha Timmons paid Cal to kidnap me,” She states.
