Amber

 

 The ding on my phone wakes me up. I pick it up to see a text from my dad. 

 -Hi, honey. How are you doing?- It says.

 I sigh heavily as I respond to him. -I’m okay.-

 -Just okay?- 

 -Sure- 

 -It will be alright, Amber. You got this. You are where you belong-

 I frown at the message. ‘I belong with two assholes?’ I snort to myself.

 ‘They aren’t assholes,’ Lilith wakes up. ‘They slept all night in front of the door.’

 I ignore her as I respond to my father. There is a knock on the door, and I jump. Sheila walks into the room, and I sit up. I can smell that Tyler is nearby, and I shudder.

 “Amber?” She says quietly. “Why are you sleeping on the couch?” She narrows her eyes at me.

 “Reasons,” I respond tersely as Sheila shuts the door.

 “Oh, it’s a brand new bed with the finest linens,” she explains.

 “That’s fine. I have no intention of making myself at home,” I say, and Sheila frowns.

 “But this is your home now,” she argues.

 I shake my head as I look at my phone. 

 “I would like you to come to breakfast so Victor and I can officially welcome you to the pack,” She smiles.

 “I would like to go to training first. I always train before breakfast,” I explain.

 “Oh, okay, then,” Sheila nods. “Anyways, I’ll see you later,” She looks at my clothes in a pile on the ottoman. “I’ll have an omega put your clothes in the closet.”

 “That’s not necessary,” I huff. “Like I said. I am not going to get too comfortable here.”

 Sheila shakes her head and heads towards the door. She opens in, and Tyler nearly stumbles into her. “Tyler,” she pushes him back.

 I glare at him as he looks over at me. Sheila closes the door, and I let out the breath I was holding. I get up from the couch, slink into the bathroom, and quickly go through my routine. I throw on a pair of black spandex and a grey sports bra and put my hair in a tight ponytail. I walk out of the room and run into Corie.

 “Good morning, Amber,” She grins at me. “Are you going to breakfast?”

 “Not yet,” I respond. “Your Dad wanted me to meet up with Cole Walker on the training field.”

 “Oh,” Corie snorts. “He’s a hard ass.”

 “I would imagine,” I laugh as we reach the elevators. 

 “Can we hang out later, maybe?” She asks.

 “Maybe,” I smile at her.

 “Cool!” She claps her hands.

 We get into the elevator and ride in silence. The twins’ scents linger in the elevator and hallways, making my wolf pace and whine. She wants more time with her mates. But I plan to ignore them as much as I can until I am allowed to leave this pack. 

 “I’ll see you later, Amber,” Corie says, and we part ways.

 I walk out of the packhouse and set off toward the training grounds. The scent of rain and forest leads me there. My heart thrums as Lilith pushes me to find Skylar and Tyler. ‘Stop it, Lil,’ I hiss at her.

 She whines and retreats sadly to the back of my head. 

 I reach the grounds and see the twins sparring with each other. I stare at them momentarily as a burly man with a pronounced limp walks up to me. 

 “You must be Amber Payne,” He holds out a hand to me. 

 “I am,” I respond.

 “I am Cole Walker, head trainer, and top warrior,” He says as a handsome younger man walks up to us. “This is my son, Callen or Cal, as everyone calls him.”

 Cal smiles at me, and I shudder. He is almost as tall as the twins, with dirty blonde hair and light blue eyes, “Amber?”

 “Yes,” I nod.

 “Anyways, Alpha Victor asked me to evaluate your abilities this morning,” Cole explains. “Cal will spar with you.”

 “Cool,” I smile sweetly at Cal as Lilith growls in protest.

 ‘He is not your mate,’ She reminds me.

 I ignore her as I start my warm-ups. I am keenly aware that Skylar and Tyler are stealing glances at me.

 “So, what pack do you hail from?” Cal walks up to me. He has on a white tank top that shows off his big muscles.

 “Shadow Winds,” I respond, and Cal’s eyes widen.

 “No shit? Awesome,” He snorts.

 “Oh, so you have heard of us?” I laugh. 

 “Yeah,” Cal sputters. “Every warrior knows about Shadow Winds and Alpha Martin’s Elite Squad.”

 “Alpha Henry Martin is my uncle,” I blurt out.

 “Really? Oh shit, so sparring with you is going to be a challenge,” Cal smirks. “I like a good challenge,” He winks, and my knees go weak.

 ‘Stop it,’ Lilith growls.

 “I like a good challenge, too,” I smile back. 

 We run a few laps around the field. I keep glancing at the twins just as they look away from me. Cole walks up to us after the laps and claps his hands, “Okay, show us what you got,” He tells me. “You can spar with Cal. Go easy on him,” Cole smirks.

 “I’ll try,” I grin at Cal, and we walk onto the field. I put up my fighting stance.

 “She’s sparring with us,” Skylar growls as Tyler stands behind him.

 I huff.

 “But-“ Cal tries to argue, but Skylar punches him in the gut, making me angry.

 ‘Asshole,’ I think to myself. ‘I am going to show him.’

 “We are the alphas here,” Skylar snarls at Cal.

 Cal backs away and gives me a sad look as he walks to the sidelines.

 “You are sparring with us,” Skylar hisses at me.

 I roll my eyes, “Whatever.”

 Skylar pulls off his shirt, exposing his muscles. I almost come undone, staring at him as Lilith is acting a fool in my head.

 ‘Look at him,’ she yells.

 I take a deep breath and put up my fighting stance. Tyler smiles at me and pulls off his shirt. I am now faced with both of my mates shirtless. ‘I can do this,’ I whisper to myself. I take another deep breath and lunge at Skylar.
